There are few producers in Australia today operating at Yangarra’s level of vision, precision and purpose. Tucked into the high sands of Blewitt Springs - McLaren Vale’s most prized and distinctive pocket - this certified biodynamic estate has become a benchmark not just for Grenache, but for what modern Australian wine can and should be.
At the helm is Peter Fraser, Yangarra’s longtime winemaker and now CEO. Fraser is a farmer and futurist. For over two decades, he’s pursued purity and finesse over flash, crafting wines that hum with energy and a deep sense of place. His work with amphorae, ceramic eggs, whole bunches and extended maceration isn’t about trend-chasing - it’s an honest, granular pursuit of texture and transparency. Wines like High Sands Grenache and the Ovitelli suite aren’t just critical darlings and high watermarks for McLaren Vale Grenache; they’re touchstones for a new generation of Australian fine wine.
In the vineyard, Michael Lane - Head of Viticulture - is equally exacting. Lane’s stewardship of the land is rooted in organic and biodynamic viticulture, regenerative farming, with an obsessive attention to soil health, biodiversity and resilience in a changing climate. His work has elevated Yangarra’s 170-hectare estate to one of the most thoughtfully farmed sites in the country. Every block, every row, is managed with precision and patience, and it shows in the fruit: pristine, balanced, quietly powerful.
Together, Fraser and Lane have cultivated something profound. Yangarra isn’t just making great wine - they’re reshaping the possibilities of warm-climate viticulture in Australia. They’ve given Mediterranean varieties a new home, stripped McLaren Vale of its old clichés, and created a portfolio that moves from cellar-worthy icons to weeknight staples without ever missing a beat.
This isn’t just one of the great estates of Australia. It’s one of the great stories in contemporary wine.
"That the Yangarra wines, from the seemingly humble, to the exalted, are unerringly excellent is no surprise. Brilliant, category re-defining grenache and exemplary shiraz are made at this address, but so too are genuinely world-class white wines, which further help to redefine the possibilities for what is arguably Australia’s most progressive and exciting wine region."
