Description

Yangarra Estate has long been a leader in Rhône varieties, and their 2022 Roussanne is yet another example of why they’re so highly regarded. Sourced from certified organic and biodynamic vineyards in Blewitt Springs, this wine combines texture, fragrance, and complexity into one of the best-value and highest-quality examples of the variety in Australia.

The fruit comes from two of Yangarra's estate blocks, each bringing something different to the table—Block 6 adds finesse and restraint, while Block 20 brings richness and boldness. Hand-picked and basket-pressed, the juice was wild fermented in French oak puncheons (30% new) before maturing on lees for eight months, with regular stirring to build texture and depth.

Golden stone fruit, lemon curd, and a hint of spice set the tone on the nose, while the palate delivers layers of peach, almond, and a subtle saline edge. It’s textural and savoury, with bright acidity keeping everything fresh and focused.

This is Roussanne done right—characterful, balanced, and a great reflection of Yangarra’s quality-obsessed, Rhône-inspired approach.

"Oh, yes. All of what you’d call moreish, savoury and mouthwatering in one sniff and sip. The presence, the power... Oh, yes, one more sip, please."
- Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

94 Points
"Often nudging the top cuvées, yet a bit more understated in terms of its make-up, if not a little more effusive of its pithy, gingery stone fruit and rooibos exclamations. As reliant on a chewy rail of phenolics as obvious freshness, this is very good and strongly suggestive of great southern Rhône expressions."
- Ned Goodwin (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Oh, yes. All of what you’d call moreish, savoury and mouthwatering in one sniff and sip. The presence, the power. Peanut brittle meets chicken salt, fennel or cumin almost, macadamia nut, wet clay-earthy type of aroma, gingerbread and preserved lemons. Long finish. Underlying fruit sweetness or ripeness is heavily laced with white amaro bitterness, something like Lillet Blanc. Oh, yes, one more sip, please." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

94 Points - "Hand picked and basket pressed, partially to French puncheons (30% new), where it underwent spontaneous fermentation following controlled oxidative handling. Often nudging the top cuvées, yet a bit more understated in terms of its make-up, if not a little more effusive of its pithy, gingery stone fruit and rooibos exclamations. As reliant on a chewy rail of phenolics as obvious freshness, this is very good and strongly suggestive of great southern Rhône expressions." - Ned Goodwin (Halliday Wine Companion)

Intrigued by this rare golden beauty, whose origins lie in the Rhône Valley of southern France, we have been producing Roussanne since 2007. Expect fragrance, power, and savoury textural delight with great rewards in the cellar, for those who can wait.

VINTAGE SUMMARY

The 2022 growing season followed very similar conditions to 2021, though slightly cooler. There were favourable winter rains and a mild flowering and fruit set period. The cool ripening period took place between late January through to harvest in March. Yields were well balanced, and we are pleased with the fruit ripeness, intensity, freshness, and natural acidity.

WINEMAKING

Sourced from two blocks within our estate, the late ripening (27th March) Block 6 bringing a more restrained and finer expression, while the earlier ripening (20th March) Block 20 gives bolder characters and generosity driven primarily by aspect. Hand-picked and basket pressed, retaining earlier free run for this blend. No sulphur or acid was added to the juice, as we feel a little oxidation at this stage helps to remove some of the varieties trademark tannin and accentuates texture. The un-fined and unsettled juice was transferred to French oak puncheons (30% new), where it underwent wild yeast fermentation. The wine was matured for 8 months, stirred monthly with the lees retained. Bottled November 2022. Certified Organic and Biodynamic.

Yangarra

Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!

They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. In the reds, their Grenache is as good as any in the land and is truly world class, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block.

A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and one of the country's modern day icon producers.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
