Description

The Yangarra Old Vine Grenache is a touchstone for this uniquely Australian style of single-varietal Grenache. It's a brilliant showcase of McLaren Vale’s Grenache heritage. From gnarly bush vines planted in 1946 on the sandy soils of “The Beach,” this wine brings together decades of history, biodynamic farming, and thoughtful winemaking in one of Australia's best value icon wines.

The cool, wet 2023 growing season gave the vines a chance to thrive, producing fruit with incredible balance and finesse. Hand-picked and fermented with wild yeast, half of the fruit was left as whole berries for a touch of brightness, while gentle handling throughout ensured the tannins stayed silky and refined. After maturing in a mix of old French oak, Austrian foudre, ceramic egg, and amphora, the result is emphatically perfumed, seriously structured, utterly delicious Grenache that will only improve with time in the cellar.

It shows aromas of red berries, wild herbs, and a hint of earthy spice, with a touch of floral lift. On the palate, it’s silky and elegant, with juicy fruit, fine tannins, and a savoury finish that lingers beautifully.

A serious Grenache with great pedigree, the 2023 is one of the 'prettier' vintages of this wine in recent memory—Yangarra has nailed it again.

96 points
"It’s a gloriously fine and elegant expression of this cuvée, but it has tannic drive, line and length, savouriness, flavour depth and detail. Excellent."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

"This wine remains a gift; intricacy of fruit, tannin and texture of this nature is rarely within such reach."

"In many ways atypically Australian, but very much a part of this regional and vineyard expression."
- Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

96 points - "From the estate’s 1946-planted bush vines. Half whole berries, half crushed, with gentle pump overs and extended maceration on some parcels up to seven months; matured in older French puncheons, foudre, ceramic eggs and amphorae. This is quite a different wine to the 2022. That’s a tale of two seasons. Both cool, but the buttress of natural tannin in the 2022 is commanding and it is more compressed, needing time. This is prettily lifted, with cherry, cranberry, rosehip, dried orange peel, wild raspberry and red florals. It’s a gloriously fine and elegant expression of this cuvée, but it has tannic drive, line and length, savouriness, flavour depth and detail. Excellent." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "From 13.3 hectares of unirrigated bush vine Grenache, planted in 1946. Destemmed then fermented wild as 50/50 crushed and whole berries. Maceration on some parcels was as long as seven months. No pressings used. Matured in old French and Austrian foudres and puncheons, ceramic eggs and amphora. It was bottled in February for release in September, and has only just been sent out now. It feels nervy at first but it quickly settles and even before it has, a net of tannin has expanded and taken control. This grenache, even as it prances and skits, knows that it’s going to be good. It shows raspberry, cranberry and pomegranate characters, pippy and fruity, light and not light, a fish that can fly across the surface even as it dives for the deep. There’s a cleanliness to this wine but not a sterility; it presents its character in fresh, clean, intertwined lines. At $50 this wine remains a gift; intricacy of fruit, tannin and texture of this nature is rarely within such reach." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

95 points - "Winemaker Peter Fraser knows a thing or two about grenache and this is an example of how he has finessed the fruit from this cooler vintage to create a wine of elegance and refinement. The savoury dried herbs of Blewitt Springs bring it to a vibrant highly energised palate. In many ways atypically Australian, but very much a part of this regional and vineyard expression." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

Gorgeous drop from the land of Yangarra

I am not usually a Grenache drinker, but this wine and the Ovitelli Grenache have been the highlight of my drinking journey in 2024.

Gorgeous perfume on the nose, not too acidic and easily drinkable following 1 hour of decant.

    Highly recommended.

I’ve had this a lot, I think the 21 is a bit sweeter and not as nice but still both delicious

The growing season began with significantly higher than average rainfall. The cool, wet conditions continued through Spring, setting us up for balanced canopies and lower yields. La Niña weather patterns forecast cooler temperatures and continued rainfall for harvest. We were able to enhance vineyard practices such as shoot thinning and leaf removal to promote airflow, reduce mildew and increase sun exposure to bunches. From our experience, a cold vintage in a warm region can produce some of the best wines. Due to the cultural practices implemented, we were able to pick the majority of the vineyard in a three-week window prior to Easter, completed in early April. Wines produced from this vintage will be some of the prettiest and most delicate from the Estate.

WINEMAKING

Sourced exclusively from 13.3 hectares of un-irrigated bush vines planted in 1946. Hand-picked between 17-24th March, selectively sorted in the winery. Gently destemmed, 50% crushed, 50% whole berries retained. Wild yeast fermentation in stainless steel. A very gentle pump over regime, often just wetting the cap. Some extended macerating where taming or polishing of tannin required and in some cases up to 7 months. No pressings used. Maturation in a mixture of old French and Austrian oak foudre and puncheons, ceramic egg and amphora. Certified Organic/Biodynamic. Bottled February 2024.

These gnarly strugglers were planted in 1946 in a deep sandy dune we call The Beach, overlying the North Maslin Sands geological formation. The Old Vine Grenache is a complex, perfumed and elegant wine with a trademark tannin structure.

Yangarra

Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!

They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. In the reds, their Grenache is as good as any in the land and is truly world class, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block.

A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and one of the country's modern day icon producers.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
