Adelina
Adelina Wines, founded by Jennie Gardner and Col McBryde, is nestled in the Springfarm Valley, just south of Clare township in the Clare Valley. This winery, established in 2002, is home to some of the region's oldest vineyards, with sections dating back to 1910. The estate includes 1 hectare each of Shiraz and Grenache, 1 hectare of bush-vine Mataro, 0.5 hectares of Malbec, and 2.2 hectares of Shiraz, along with a unique field blend grafted onto old Cabernet vines.
Col and Jennie, both holding PhDs in microbiology, have transformed the vineyard using organic farming methods, achieving certification in 2020. Their commitment to sustainability and minimal intervention winemaking shines through in every bottle. Most of their fruit is estate-grown, but they also source select grapes from trusted sites in the Clare Valley and Adelaide Hills.
"Col McBryde (is) one of the best, most thoughtful winemakers in this country, and indeed, maybe the world."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
Adelina’s wines are known for their delicacy, purity, and expression of the unique terroir of their vineyards. The portfolio includes old vine Shiraz and Mataro, exceptional Nebbiolo, and scintillating Rieslings. Their 80-year-old Grenache vines produce wines that are fine-boned and high-toned, reflecting the new wave of Australian Grenache. Their Shiraz, grown on gnarly centurion vines, showcases bold flavors and impressive tannins.
The winery operates with sustainability at its core. Vineyards are essentially dry-grown, with rainwater used minimally to support young vines. Manual weeding, maintaining native scrub on the property, and reducing tractor use are all part of their approach. They are also in the process of becoming certified carbon neutral.
"Every one of Adelina’s wines is carefully grown, designed and made; every wine is both flavoursome and interesting. These are wines of both body and finish; they are modern and they are traditional, too. If you’ve not yet experienced the joys of Adelina you can essentially take your pick of any wine in the range and it is guaranteed to illustrate the reason for the excitement."
- Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Top 100 Wineries of the Year)
Col and Jennie’s focus on growing vines that produce wines with a clear sense of place has resulted in wines that are more finessed, brighter, and focused. Adelina Wines continues to be a beacon of quality and innovation in the Clare Valley, offering wines that are a true reflection of their unique terroir and commitment to sustainable practices.
