Description

97 points & Top 100 Wines of 2024
"Raspberry, pomegranate, redcurrant, rosehip, musk, anise, dried orange peel, the fruit impeccably framed on the nose, and bound by an intricate net of fine sandy tannin on the palate carrying incredibly long. It’s an exceptional release."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

Pete Fraser and Yangarra get to spread their wings here, with a small batch Grenache made from the iconic Hickinbotham vineyard.

Situated just 5 minutes up the road in Clarendon, the Hickinbotham vineyard has different soils and elevation to that of Yangarra, but the quality and attention to detail in the winery is no different.

It's always a flavour-packed, pure-fruited style, with the 2022 tannic thumbprint only enhancing its power and presence.

A stunning Grenache and right up there with the region's best.

97 points & Top 100 Wines of 2024 "Destemmed, crushed and fermented in 1800L ‘cocciopesto’ (or opus signinum – a Roman ‘concrete’ that was used in bathhouses, cisterns and aqueducts) amphorae, with about 150 days on skins before pressing and returning, with 15 months' total time. Compared to the Ovitelli, this often shows a little more forward fruit and textural flex. In a year like 2022, where tannins and savouriness are turned up, that brighter pop gives this an earlier appeal, though it is no less equipped with mouth-puckering grip and zippy acidity. Raspberry, pomegranate, redcurrant, rosehip, musk, anise, dried orange peel, the fruit impeccably framed on the nose, and bound by an intricate net of fine sandy tannin on the palate carrying incredibly long. It’s an exceptional release." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points, "Deep-ish, bright red with a good tint of purple; smoky reduction and earthy/woodsy aromas, milled peppercorns, terracotta/baked earth and dried-flower nuances. The palate is on the medium side of full bodied and has plenty of firm but fine tannins. A solid but elegant grenache of high quality. Impressive structure and ageworthiness." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points, "Bright, crystalline ruby red in the glass. Lift of raspberry and rose petal, hint of dry soil on the nose. Palate Is medium weighted with slippery red berry fruits and a subtle dried herbal undertone. Well-framed tannins ensure it carries and drives with focus and tension and the finish is remarkable in its length and detail." - Stuart Knox (Real Review)

95 points, "Fragrant and vital, with crushed rose petals, dried thyme, strawberries and lavender. The tannins are long, lithe and detailed. Full-bodied yet floral. The feel is ethereal and the texture diaphanous until the ferrous, somewhat rustic tannins show in the finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2028." - Ned Goodwin (JamesSuckling.com)

92+ points, "Strawberry conserve, raspberry, mint and sweet spice. It’s a juicy strawberry flavoured wine, with firm stony and dusty tannin, does not have the depth and verity of fruit of the High Sands or Ovitelli, nor the complexity. It is juicy though, and offers almond and sage leaf, with a dusty chalky finish of good length." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

    Great Grenache

Prefer this wine over the Yangarra Ovitelli, it is a fuller bodied wine and better integrated.

    Dark brooding newcomer

Towards the darker, more potent end of the new Grenache scale. Deeply scented nose, dark cherry and plum with irony hints. Superbly worked palate, pleasantly fine gritty tannins provide a strong framework for the potent dark fruits. A keeper.

From a site whose slopes are steeped in rich history, we source this Grenache from unirrigated bush vines planted in 1962 on the Hickinbotham Clarendon vineyard. Its distinctive fruit is nurtured with a gentle wild fermentation and matured in grand ‘cocciopesto’ amphorae. Capturing a contrasting expression of detailed perfume and a loose knit weave of tannins.

Yangarra

Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!

They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. In the reds, their Grenache is as good as any in the land and is truly world class, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block.

A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and one of the country's modern day icon producers.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
