Description

This is an exquisite Single Vineyard Chardonnay from Anna Pooley and the whole Pooley team.

The Cooinda Vale fruit in this wine once formed an integral component of the famous Yattarna Chardonnay from Penfolds. Since 2016 Anna has kept the fruit separate in order to produce a single expression from this immaculate site. And it's a blinder.

It's a blistering Chardonnay - tight, nervy and crackling with energy.

Get in now on what is sure to be one of Tasmania's most sought-after Chardonnays given time.

"It has a fair amount of flinty struck match, pink grapefruit, white nectarine, white flower and fennel tip perfume, cashew and spicy cinnamon oak. It lights up the palate, it crackles with energy, but also has some umami flavours, a light chicken broth, oatmeal, that kind of thing, has a certain juiciness too, and offers plenty of salted cashew and stony things on a finish of superb length. It’s such a good and interesting expression of Chardonnay. Tight, yes, but delivers heaps of flavour. Unreal."

Cooinda Vale Vineyard was established in 1985 by Pooley’s founders, Margaret and Dennis Pooley. Sitting between 80-100m above sea level, the vineyard is tucked away in a nook of hills North of Campania making it much more protected from prevailing weather conditions. Being more continental it also experiences greater extremes in temperatures bringing more frequent frosts, snow and heat waves. The iron lacking grey brown sandy loam over clay subsoils at this site tend to bring a moderate level of struggle to the vines by restricting deep root growth and water accessibility but in turn creates a wine that is more delicate and finer.

The 2023 growing season started with budburst in September and continued with flowering in November. This year, we experienced a lot of wind and rain during flowering which makes for very challenging conditions. Between October and December 2022, there was 230mm of rainfall at both of our vineyard sites. It resulted in poor fruit set, and an overall reduction in yield for the season. Late December saw the rain disappear, leading away from the La Nina weather pattern and towards a drier, warmer El Nino period. It was a mild summer with no extremes of heat, whilst remaining warm. This is great for steady and slow development of flavour, acid, sugar, and tannin. All the elements that make for great quality wine.

Pooley

Pooley is one of the leading family-owned wineries in Tasmania, renowned for their exquisite Single Vineyard examples of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling from the Coal River region, less than an hour north of Hobart.

The family vineyard was planted in 1985 by Margaret and Denis Pooley. Today it is in the hands of the third generation of Pooleys, with award-winning winemaker Anna Pooley heading up the cellar and her brother Matt as viticulturalist. They make a killer team and the family business is going from strength to strength.

Anna's wines are pure, refined and eminently cellar-worthy. A class-act producer setting a cracking pace for all of Tasmania to follow.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
