Description

A future classic for Clare Valley Shiraz in the making from Col McBryde and Jen Gardner.

Grown on gnarly old centurion vines in some of the region's finest grape-growing land, the vineyard features a unique soil mix of red sand, clay, slate, and limestone. The grapes, grown at 460m elevation, benefit from organic farming certified by ACO.

This is a knockout Shiraz of intensity, class, and immense potential. It's Clare Valley through and through. Bold and striking, showing regional mint and purple fruit on a bedrock of incredibly impressive tannin.

Produced in extremely limited quantities, the Adelina Estate Shiraz is a stunning, true blue Aussie expression of century-old vines. This is the beauty of some of the Clare Valley's finest terroir writ large.

96 points & Top 100 Wines of 2024
"This comes from 1915 plantings. On skins for around three weeks in concrete and matures in 700L oak barrels, with around 25% new oak in this wine. Slimline and succulent expression of shiraz, though plenty of meatiness, rich, red berry fruits, woody spices and a strong currency of graphite minerality with an almost river-pebble texture, including the web of lacy, puckering tannin that stretches the wine so long and fine. A touch of rugged undergrowth-like character anchors the wine to Clare. It’s stellar stuff here, elegant but so very detailed in its fruit, spice and savoury elements."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion

96 Points
"Col McBryde one of the best, most thoughtful winemakers in this country, and indeed, maybe the world. Blackberry, raspberry, a little sweet baking spice, mint and floral perfume, though those things, while good, mean nothing until you put the wine in your mouth; then it really takes off. This is a liquid ‘mineral’ delight, and the tannin is searching, but so fine and stony, and really marks this wine out as a rare bird. Dusty, biscuitty, classic Clare Shiraz of finesse and superb length. Yes."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Blackberry, raspberry, a little sweet baking spice, mint and floral perfume, though those things, while good, mean nothing until you put the wine in your mouth; then it really takes off. 95 points - "The Adelina Block 4 Vineyard is at an elevation of 460 meters. The nose of this 2022 Shiraz leads with a balanced display of rose petals, pastrami, dark chocolate (and some milk chocolate too), pink peppercorns, ferrous, amaro-like tannins and a distinct asphalt/concrete character to the finish. It's a classy wine to the end, with a really impressive arc of evolution in the mouth: perfume > supple flavor > fine tannins > flowing finish > lingering spice. It's a pleasure (I recall the "pleasure" last vintage too), and what's more, it drags you back in for another sip soon after the first. It has a good feedback loop. I like it. This is floral and tannic, savory and fresh, kind of like a Nebbiolo. I love Nebbiolo. 13.8% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

94 points - "This is good gear. Of place. Lacking pretence. Mid-weighted of feel. A mellifluous roll across the mouth, laden with iodine, blue fruit allusions, licorice all sorts, cloves and a fleck of menthol, yet nothing obtuse or drying. The tannins evince a gentle gritty tension, marked by detail and admirable precision, while promoting a sinuous drive to a long finish. Wonderful tannins here. Nourishing and delicious. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)

This blew me away at the price

If I'd tasted this blind, I would have thought this was a wine I couldn't afford. It's complex and hard to nail all of the flavours. Is it berry, plum or forest floor? Probably all three and more. Is it star anise or chocolate? Probably both and more. Its colour is superb and lingers forever. The bottle is gorgeous. This is a superb wine at the price. I'm now wishing I'd bought more. Bugger it - I just did

Adelina

Adelina Wines, established by Jennie Gardner and Col McBryde, is situated in the Springfarm Valley of Clare Valley. With vineyards dating back to 1910, the estate includes Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Malbec, and a unique field blend. Col and Jennie, both PhDs in microbiology, have transformed the vineyard with organic farming methods, achieving certification in 2020.

Their wines are known for delicacy, purity, and terroir expression, featuring old vine Shiraz and Mataro, exceptional Nebbiolo, and vibrant Rieslings. The 80-year-old Grenache vines produce fine-boned, high-toned wines, while the Shiraz showcases bold flavors and impressive tannins.

Sustainability is central to their approach, with minimal water use, manual weeding, and maintaining native scrub. They are also pursuing carbon-neutral certification. Adelina Wines embodies quality and innovation, offering wines that reflect their unique terroir and sustainable practices.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
