Description

Originally planted by Dr Andrew Pirie in the late ’90s, Bird is one of those quietly iconic vineyards that has helped shape Tasmania’s Pinot story - and Jim Chatto has the good fortune of securing a small parcel of clone 114 fruit each year. From its perch in the Pipers River region of northern Tasmania, Bird brings a lifted, ethereal counterpoint to the richer, more brooding expressions in Jim’s line-up.

This is Pinot Noir that whispers rather than shouts. It floats out of the glass with red fruit, floral lift and spice, built around a featherweight frame that somehow still feels complete. There’s a fine-boned precision here - a see-through quality - that makes it as elegant as any wine in the Chatto range.

Fermented wild and raised in large-format French foudre, Bird is what Jim affectionately calls his “gateway Pinot”. Don’t mistake that for simplicity, though - this wine is quietly complex and built to reward.

95 points
"Elegant and perfumed aromas of wild raspberries, rose petals, dried herbs and wet earth… finely integrated tannins, fresh strawberries and cassia bark. Pure elegance."

"A red-fruited, elegant expression… lovely, gentle, enchanting with red cherry, wild strawberry and red plum fruits… airy and febrile, fading with spice and herbs."

95 points - “Elegant and perfumed aromas of wild raspberries, rose petals, dried herbs and wet earth. The palate is medium-bodied with finely integrated tannins, giving notes of fresh strawberries, cassia bark and cherries. Delicate with a fine structure. Made from the 114 clone. Pure elegance.” - James Suckling (jamessuckling.com)

95 points - “A red-fruited, elegant expression of pinot noir sourced from a vineyard in Pipers River. It’s a lovely, gentle, enchanting wine with a wash of red cherry, wild strawberry, redcurrant and red plum fruits stretched on a minerally canvas. Perhaps a little more concentration in the ‘23 release, but it’s airy and febrile, fading slowly away with hints of morello cherry, spice, dried citrus and a light wash of briar and herbs.” - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - “Medium-light bright red-purple colour. Subdued bouquet, but seems in good order, hinting at strawberry and red cherry. The wine is rich and sweetly ripe on the palate, with an almost jammy touch, the tannins mouth-coating and faintly bitter on a lingering finish. A big-bowl glass would bring the bouquet out more. It’s quite complex with time in the glass, with a touch of fivespice.” - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

91 points - “Quite a lot of mint and menthol here, flowering basil even, red cherry, spice, poached strawberry. It’s a light wine, kind of frisky and bright, a light pumice stone grip to tannin, has some orange juice flavour in the mix, and maybe some almond cake, but gee, it’s a bit edgy and just on the cusp of ripeness, still, it’s certainly lively. Bony and minty, but interesting all the same.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Chatto Wines

Jim Chatto is revered as one of the finest winemakers currently working in Australia.

His recent reinvigoration at Mount Pleasant in the Hunter Valley has received phenomenal critical acclaim, as has his personal Tasmanian project, Chatto wines.

After purchasing a plot of land that Jim describes as "right on the edge of viticultural possibility", planting began in 2007.

In only a short amount of time, this site has produced some extraordinary wines and looks set to become one of the Apple Isle most prized viticultural assets.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
