Description

With the awards stacking up, Lowestoft is one of the names to watch in Tassie wine right now and this is one of their best Pinot Noir offerings.

Grown on a small, south-facing vineyard along the lower Derwent River, just 8km north of Lowestoft, this Pinot Noir benefits from the cool, fog-kissed microclimate of the region.

Hand-picked and fermented with 15% whole bunches, the wine was matured for 10 months in large format French oak, 25% of which was new, before careful barrel selection and bottling. The result is a Pinot Noir that balances power with finesse, offering brooding, yet exceptionally pure fruit flavours that are both intense and elegant. The cooling influence of the “Bridgewater Jerry” fog imparts a fresh vibrancy, making this wine a true reflection of its extraordinary site.

This release from the tiny 0.5-hectare Jacoben vineyard underscores Lowestoft’s dedication to crafting wines that speak clearly of their place, with Liam McElhinney’s winemaking expertise shining through in every bottle.

97 Points & Trophy for Best In Show
"Beautifully crafted: singing red fruits without any shadowing from oak, and with the intrinsic grace and charm of the Derwent Valley’s fruit well to the fore. On the palate, it is pure, bright, and mouthfilling, packed with juicy raspberry; both tannins and acids are soft and sustaining. They nourish and ease the gorgeous fruit core through the palate to a gently subsiding finish. There’s just a touch of tarry complexity behind those fruits. Virtuoso work from a Pinot region of extraordinary promise."
- Decanter World Wine Awards 2024

96 Points
"Bright, bold, medium depth purple-red colour with a bouquet of spices, dark cherry, foresty/dried-herb nuances, complex and layered throughout with serious structure, richness, tannins and firmness that carries a long, long finish. Superb pinot noir. (Platinum medal and Best in Show award, Decanter World Wine Awards 2024)."

97 Points & Trophy for Best In Show - "The second of this year’s outstanding 2022 Tasmanian Pinot Noirs comes from the Derwent Valley, just to the north of Hobart and in the rain shadow of Mount Wellington. The region can be drought-susceptible in warm summers, but in the wetter season of 2022, its site stood it in good stead. This is a darker wine than its pan-Tasmanian peer, but beautifully crafted: singing red fruits without any shadowing from oak, and with the intrinsic grace and charm of the Derwent Valley’s fruit well to the fore. On the palate, it is pure, bright, and mouthfilling, packed with juicy raspberry; both tannins and acids are soft and sustaining. 95 Points - "I love the elegant restraint of this cool humid season, and this single vineyard in the lower Derwent Valley exemplifies its mood with tension and endurance. This is Pinot Noir scaffolded for the long haul, with an intricately engineered framework of superfine tannins supported with all the structure of impeccably poised natural acidity. I love the dynamic, setting a longevity much more Burgundian than it is Tasmanian." - Tyson Stelzer (Wine Business Magazine)

95 Points - "Single-vineyard pinot noir from the Lower Derwent Valley. Vibrant ruby with aromas of exotically-spiced red cherry, raspberry, and red plum fruits. Hints of dried mountain herbs, citrus blossom, char siu, sandalwood, dried cranberry, amaro, undergrowth, and Peking duck. Lithe and sapid on the palate with a touch of sour cherry, pillowy tannins, and a spicy, complex finish that flows on for a pleasing amount of time." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

    Decanter Magazine Trophy Winner?

OK, but I was hoping for a bit more considering the price of $100. I think I will buy Bay of Fires next time

Jacoben sits 8km north of Lowestoft on the northern side of the Derwent River. It faces south, which goes against everything the teach you at university about planting vineyards in the southern hemisphere! This site looks directly across the river to the Lubiana Vineyard and winery. Similar to Lowestoft, the soils are considered podzoic, with more sandstone and obvious alluvial contents. Quite significantly more free draining in nature than Lowestoft. Quite a lot cooler during the growing season also, as there is a fog called the “Bridgewater Jerry” which comes down the Derwent River and has quite the cooling effect. Very similar to Sonoma and Russian River in Northern California.
Superb Pinot Noir from the Jacoben Vineyard was hand-picked and fermented in 2T open top fermenters, with 15% whole bunch inclusion. Gently hand plunged, with gentle pressing to tank post MLF, followed by 10 months maturation in large format French oak (25% new) before selective barrel blending and bottling with minimal additions.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
