Description

For this wine, Hunter Valley hero Mike De Iuliis ventures to the Hilltops for his fruit. The cooler, more temperate conditions in the Hilltops region make for great ripening conditions for Cabernet.

Mike has maximised the quality of the fruit with this release. It's a smooth, medium-bodied ride, with classic cassis and blue fruits, a lick of creamy new oak and polished tannins that make it a one-glass-is-not-enough sort of proposition.

Mike is one of our favourite NSW producers and this is one of his best bargain buys in recent memory. For now, or for in a few years' time, Cabernet fans please walk this way.

The Story
Sourced from the cool climate region of Hilltops in south western NSW. The resulting wine is a fantastic expression of cool climate New South Wales with great perfume and hint of French oak on the nose.

The Wine
A herbaceous palate filled with bell pepper, eucalyptus and framed by luscious blackcurrant. The palate has an exceptionally fine tannin structure giving the wine great length.

The Vintage
The growing season bought spring rain which helped canopy growth in the vineyards. A cooler and longer ripening period allowed for red wines that are spice driven and have complex characteristics.

The Potential
Cabernet Sauvignon has the potential for short-medium term ageing but we really enjoy the young characteristics of this wine right now. The choice is yours to either drink up or stash away for the next five years.

The Match
A slow-roasted lamb shoulder alongside roasted root vegetables will be a treat with the 2021 Special Release Cabernet Sauvignon. A good slathering of homemade mint jelly sauce will be perfect!

97 Points - "Mike De Iuliis is understandably enraptured by the 'pristine' fruit of a wine that's a 'fantastic expression of cabernet' with an 'exceptionally fine tannin structure.' He ran out of space to praise the glorious colour the wine has. It's one of those all-too-rare cabernets to be drinking well now, but with an outlook as long as you wish. Gorgeous bargain." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

    Soft and delicate

Lovely, lighter cab with fine tannins. 97 points from JH may be a bit excitable but very good value from a top Hunter producer.

    A knockout cab

The sharp pricing might get your attention, but this doesn’t drink like something from the bargain bin. Opaque crimson, soft tannins and lovely structure makes for a very enjoyable - and serious - Cabernet.

De Iuliis

De Iuliis - pronounced [de uli ~ iss] - is one of the brightest stars from the Hunter Valley.

Owners Joss and Anna De luliis first planted vines on their estate in the famous Lovedale sub-region back in 1990, but it wasn’t until their son Mike got involved after graduating from the world-renowned Roseworthy campus (Adelaide University) in 1999 that things really took off.

Today Mike crafts an excellent array of site-specific wines that are a very good modern representation of what the Hunter Valley has to offer.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
