Sijnn
Sijnn Wines is a pioneering estate located at the southern tip of Africa. In 2000, David and Rita Trafford discovered the incredible soils of Malgas and immediately saw the potential for exceptional wine. Sijnn Wines, situated along the Breede River, is the first growth appellation in this remote region.
Just 15 kilometers from the sea, the estate enjoys a warm maritime climate moderated by ocean breezes. The challenging soils and dry conditions produce low-vigour, low-yield bush vines that thrive naturally. This unique terroir is the foundation of Sijnn’s distinctive wines.
David and Rita's journey began with a serendipitous vacation to Malgas. Partnering with Simon Farr, founder of Bibendum Wine, they planted twelve hectares of vines after extensive soil studies. Initially, grapes were sent to Stellenbosch, but in 2014, Sijnn built its own winery with Charla Bosman as head winemaker. Charla, with experience from Kanonkop, Tokara, and Santa Barbara, brought a fresh perspective to Sijnn. By her early thirties, she had earned the Tim Atkin Young Winemaker of the Year award in 2022.
Sijnn specializes in Mediterranean varieties like Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Tempranillo, Chenin Blanc, and Viognier, while also exploring Roussanne and Verdelho. Their minimalist winemaking approach captures the wild, rugged essence of Malgas, producing wines with a profound sense of place.
James Molesworth of Wine Spectator praises Sijnn for its soulful, pioneering winemaking. For wine enthusiasts, Sijnn Wines offers an experience that is both unique and deeply connected to its terroir.
