Dalwhinnie
Dalwhinnie Winery is a world-class vineyard situated in a natural amphitheatre with one of the most breathtaking views in Australia.
Founded by Ewan Jones in the early 1970s and named after his ancestral Scottish Highland town, the vineyard spans 16 hectares divided into low-cropping blocks averaging 1.8 hectares each. Situated near Moonambel in Western Victoria, Dalwhinnie is one of the Pyrenees region’s premier vineyards for Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Cabernet.
At 595 meters above sea level, it boasts a unique microclimate created by its amphitheater-like setting. This site benefits from cool temperatures and diverse aspects, producing wines with both finesse and robust flavour. The iron-rich soil, studded with granite, quartz, and ironstone, provides an ideal foundation for producing top-of-the-line cool-climate fruit, which, when on song, are comparable to the very best wines of their kind in all of Australia.
Julian Langworthy's first full vintage at Dalwhinnie in 2020 identified The Eagle and The Pinnacle blocks as standout performers. The Eagle features fine, long tannins and dense fruit, while The Pinnacle offers a softer, sun-kissed profile. Both blocks exhibit the distinctive minerality that Dalwhinnie wines are known for, especially evident in the "Moonambel" Shiraz.
"For some years now Dalwhinnie has been the sleeping beauty of Australian wine. No longer. The grapes here are grown on the most stunning of sites; it’s one of the few vineyards that every Australian wine lover should visit at least once. A recent change in ownership and winemaking has seen these Pyrenees wines roar back into elite contention. Welcome back, Dalwhinnie."
