Description

Tapanappa's Tiers Vineyard sits in the Piccadilly Valley, with the Chardonnay vines having been planted some 30-50 years ago. There's definitely an elegance here that owes something to the vineyard; a drive and length suited to a wine of such esteemed rootstock.

It's another stellar release from winemaker Brian Croser, who lets the grapes do the talking here. After picking, the fruit undergoes fermentation in French barriques, about one-third of which is new oak. A bit of lees work happens over summer, before racking and bottling in January.

A sensational wine of balance and finesse that shows just how exceptional Adelaide Hills Chardonnay can be.

"This has to rank up there with the best of the Tiers Vineyard chardies yet released... A dry savoury and tight subtle astringency on the finish provides the final flourish to an outstanding wine."

"The 2024 Tiers Vineyard Chardonnay always ratchets up the fruit power and intensity from all other Chardonnays, both at Tapanappa and in the Adelaide Hills region at large. This usually gives us a thundering display of concentration and phenolic drive, and this 2024 iteration is no exception to that long-established rule."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

"Pithy, crunchy acidity then kicks in and delivers shape, cut and drive. The finish is long and multi-dimensional. Very classy gear."

"Here we have the pinnacle Chardonnay release from the first vineyard planted in the Piccadilly Valley since the 19th century... The finish is immensely architectural, with bitter grapefruit laced phenolics gripping at the sides along with that salivating acid line to a citrussy, chalky close. Wow, this one is for the long haul and the rewards of patience will undoubtedly excite."

"Another superb Tiers Chardonnay highlighting the beauty achieved with the grape in the Adelaide Hills... Brisk acidity with a citrus zest, quince-like tartness is well placed, balancing the impending richness promised of this wine. All is ready, it’s a fine addition to the Tiers roll call of top Chardonnays."
- Jeni Port (Wine Pilot)

97 points - "This has to rank up there with the best of the Tiers Vineyard chardies yet released. It was an ever so slightly warmer vintage than the previous and this is reflected in the depth and fruit concentration expressed with relative opulence. Lots of nectarine, and cashew with a spicy pear edge to it. The fine chalky acid really holds the tension ensuring a defined and exceptionally long finish. A dry savoury and tight subtle astringency on the finish provides the final flourish to an outstanding wine." - Ray Jordan

This usually gives us a thundering display of concentration and phenolic drive, and this 2024 iteration is no exception to that long-established rule. There are notes of crushed and salted nuts, saffron, Golden Delicious apples, nougat and oyster shell/shale with a scintillating acid line. I still quietly wonder to myself if we are seeing these wines too young. However, it then becomes up to us to exercise some restraint when selecting our drinking windows. For me, this wine will be at its best a couple of years from now and into the long future ahead. May we all age so gracefully. 14.1% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

96 points - "Complex and layered aromas of cashew nut, just-ripe white stone fruit, wheat puff, white flowers and grapefruit pith. Fine, focused and layered in flavour. There’s a drive of stone fruit, melon and a nutty creaminess. Pithy, crunchy acidity then kicks in and delivers shape, cut and drive. The finish is long and multi-dimensional. Very classy gear." - Aaron Brasher (The Real Review)

96 points - "Here we have the pinnacle Chardonnay release from the first vineyard planted in the Piccadilly Valley since the 19th century. Restrained power is the term that comes to mind here. It’s tight and focussed, yielding enough aromatic presence to get you excited, but for the future more than the present. Grapefruit, white nectarine and white peach sit above cashew, lemon juice, almond, taut green apple and floral bath salts that build with air. Some mandarin pith and flint notes follow, and there’s a mineral shot through the centre in an oyster shell form bringing a lovely twang of saline complexity. The fine cedar oak is taking a back seat here, supporting an otherwise fresh, bright and powerful wine. The palate is tight and chalky in a similarly intensely coiled and tensile feel with rapier acidity constricting the mouth around lemon juice, green apple, peach blossom, peach skin and mandarin skin. The finish is immensely architectural, with bitter grapefruit laced phenolics gripping at the sides along with that salivating acid line to a citrussy, chalky close. Wow, this one is for the long haul and the rewards of patience will undoubtedly excite. Drink 2030 – 2040" - Tom Kline (Wine Pilot)

96 points - "Another superb Tiers Chardonnay highlighting the beauty achieved with the grape in the Adelaide Hills. Adjectives get a real work out with this wine. Ripe fruit is noted and while the alcohol suggests it might be bigger – 14.1% abv – it isn’t noted on the taste. In fact, it is a refined expression, fresh in a burst of lemon and grapefruit citrus, grilled grapefruit, toasted almond, baked quince and vanilla. It’s a tight wine, well composed but compact and, frankly, it is too early for total drinking enjoyment at this stage. Place it in the cellar and just watch it bloom. It’s a wine with poise but still very much in building mode. Brisk acidity with a citrus zest, quince-like tartness is well placed, balancing the impending richness promised of this wine. All is ready, it’s a fine addition to the Tiers roll call of top Chardonnays." - Jeni Port (Wine Pilot)

96 points - "The original Tiers Vineyard Chardonnay planted in 1979 in the Piccadilly Valley was the first Adelaide Hills vineyard to unknown clones. 2024, though slightly warmer, was yet another cooler vintage in the run since 2020. Modest cropping of 4 tonnes to the hectare. French oak barrique (1/3 new) fermentation before barrel ageing until November of 2024.

Pale lemon hue. Fragrant and redolent with the richness of a slightly warmer year. Creamed honey, vanilla bean, pome (apple and pear) flesh, grilled white nectarine, cashew cream and raw nut, grapefruit flesh and juice with just a little toasty oak. For the ‘warmer’ vintage and the ABV, the structure and drive show no sign. Everything in place: There’s flesh, there’s tension, there’s drive. Bittersweet fruit gives such an addictive tartness that there’s an instant desire to return to the glass. Take your time." - Regan Drew Vino Notebook

95 points - "From the first Croser vineyard, planted ’79. A potent and rich chardonnay of distinguished power and presence. It’s set at a riper pace but feels supremely balanced and delivers emphatic notions of quality. Rich pear notes, dried and fresh, honeyed cashew, cinnamon toast, a touch of flinty minerality and red apple juiciness and a bit of crunch from that, too. Quite palate staining with its swish of sweet, liquified brown spice. A generous wine done with aplomb." - Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

Of the past five wonderful vintages in Tiers Vineyard, 2024 was not the coolest but fulfilled that old aphorism, “In a cool vineyard site, the best wines are produced in slightly warmer vintages.”

The colour of 2024 Tiers is pale lemon with a green tint. The aroma is of ripe, cool-year Chardonnay fruit, sliced nectarine and pear with faint leatherwood honey spice complexed by yeast, cashew and subtle oak. The flavour is intense and fresh, and the texture is significant, finished with a lingering cool year acidity.

The taut edge of acid and the slight astringency and bitterness of the grapefruit finish, perfectly offset the fruit and texture that are the hallmarks of the Tiers Chardonnay.

2024 Tiers Chardonnay is “a slightly warmer than average vintage of a unique wine defined by the truly distinguished Tiers Vineyard terroir”.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
