Description

Bryan Martin has always had a soft spot for Italian grapes, and his latest Fiano makes it pretty clear why. Sourced from the sun-soaked Hilltops, just north of the Canberra District, this is a white wine with some real depth behind its good-time glow.

Fiano’s naturally high acidity and gentle savoury edges play right into Bryan’s texture-focused winemaking style. It’s pressed straight to old puncheons for wild ferment and a long rest on lees, which gives the wine weight and detail without muting the freshness. Think white stone fruit, a flicker of lemon rind, maybe even a little almondy waxiness - all tied up with a saline snap that makes you want another sip.

This isn’t a showy white, but it’s full of character. A little Mediterranean flair, made with care, and built for drinking any time: from sunny lunches to seafood dinners and everything in between.

    Fresh and textural

Lots of tasty pear and citrus flavours, very fresh and drinkable, and still with that Fiano textural quality

Fiano is growing as a serious Italian varietal to grow in many local regions. The Hilltops, just one hour north of us, a little lower in elevation so just that little bit warmer than the Canberra district.

This variety loves this region, the continental climate - warm days, cold nights - allows for acid retention, lengthening the season. early days yet but we think this is the best Italian variety to grow alongside all the reds we source from Hilltops.

A wine with a balance of acid and texture, an intriguing saline quality that is a hallmark of Italian whites.

Ravensworth

Bryan Martin is one of the most creative and inquisitive winemakers we've ever met. After leaving his position as winemaker alongside Tim Kirk at Canberra regional flagbearer, Clonakilla, Bryan went full steam in on his own label Ravensworth, which has firmly hit cult status amongst collectors.

He and his wife Jocelyn have a beautiful property outside of Murrumbateman which is home to all of their excellent Estate wines and Bryan also searches surrounding vineyards and out to the Hilltops region to compile his excellent value Regional series of wines. Sustainability and an unwavering commitment to quality across the board underpin the entire operation at Ravensworth. Perhaps best known for his benchmark Shiraz Viognier and textural Rieslings, Bryan is also arguably the country's best producer of Sangiovese and is a true master of the dark art of skin-contact whites.

Bryan embodies everything we love about small artisanal Australian producers. He is humble, irreverent, committed to the pursuit of excellence and always looking to explore. Quite simply, if you see a Ravensworth wine anywhere, you should buy it.
