Description

The Solace Polish Hill River Riesling is a powerhouse of a wine, with acid aplenty and a sumptuous texture that demonstrates why this subregion is so special.

Sourced from vines planted in 1994 on Neil Pike's own Home Block vineyard (yes, planted around his house!), the east-west orientation ensures the grapes attain full ripeness through almost constant exposure to the sun during the day. The soil of red loam, red/blue slate and yellow clay - which is quite typical of Polish Hill - imparts wonderful minerality.

While often a bit shy on the nose when young, this Riesling develops pure and bright aromas of stone fruit, citrus and spice in the glass, and it can age comfortably for 10 years.

"The wine hits with the force of a shock. Wonderful stuff... Perfect balance, incredible length, fine acidity, the intensity never relents. Love it. Drink now and for the next fifteen to twenty-five years."
- Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot)

"The intensity and drive is phenomenal... Flavour is here though, an inward concentration that provides detail of fruit, acidity, minerality and the youthful profile of the wine. An experience."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Ultra mineral and cool expression of Riesling here. Lime, lavender, crushed rock things, a whole lot of lime, bright and fine, lemongrass grip and zest of lime. Some aniseed and perfume on a finish of excellent length. So good."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

“The Solace” Riesling is sourced from our own “Home Block” right in the centre of Polish Hill River (PHR) at 440m elevation. The vines were planted on their own roots in 1994 on red/brown loam over broken red/blue slate and yellow clay. Typical PHR.

Given time the fruit begins to uncoil itself from around the spine of acid and talc-like texture to reveal the beautiful lemon/lime characters that are often hidden early on. Left to age in the cellar for 7-10 years the gorgeous lemon butter aged characteristics of PHR Riesling will emerge.

Making wine from this block for almost thirty years has been a privilege. With more time on my hands these days, I have been able to find a place of peace and Solace in the pruning, growing and picking of the grapes from this lovely little patch of heaven.

97 points - "Many years ago, in one of my many less careful moments, I managed to stick my finger in an electric socket. It was not a pleasant experience. There is a touch of the electric shock about this scintillating Riesling, but it is a great deal more enjoyable than a socket. The wine hits with the force of a shock. Wonderful stuff. The colour here is the very palest lemon hue imaginable. The nose is fragrant, focused and beautifully aromatic. Poised and taut, there are notes of florals, limes, river stones, lemon curd, spices and grapefruit pith. A gossamer structure, this is all steel and silk. Perfect balance, incredible length, fine acidity, the intensity never relents. Love it. Drink now and for the next fifteen to twenty-five years." - Ken Gargett (Wine Pilot)

97 points - "100% Polish Hill River riesling. A very locavore experience from Neil Pike of limefinger, the fruit 'grown on the block planted around my home'. The intensity and drive is phenomenal. A rapier thrust of lime (yes!), gingery spice, green apple at its tartest spectrum, brine and talc minerality, a chisel of slate, chalky fringes to the wine and a wildly mouth-watering finish in tow. It races along the palate, tightly wound, skeletal, refreshing and tense. Flavour is here though, an inward concentration that provides detail of fruit, acidity, minerality and the youthful profile of the wine. An experience." - Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Ultra mineral and cool expression of Riesling here. Lime, lavender, crushed rock things, a whole lot of lime, bright and fine, lemongrass grip and zest of lime. Some aniseed and perfume on a finish of excellent length. So good." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Limefinger

After a lifetime dedicated to wine, you would think that an illustrious winemaker such as Neil Pike would want to settle down and drink wine rather than make it. Not so.

Limefinger is his "retirement project", where he grows grapes and sources fruit from trusted growers (solely Riesling), with a clear focus on sustainability at all stages of farming and production.

Given that the focus is on Riesling, it's probably no surprise that the wines on offer are from the Watervale and Polish Hill subregions. The production remains tiny (only a few thousand bottles of each wine) so they're quickly snapped up after release each year.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
