Description

The Learnings Watervale Riesling is an energetic wine designed for pure pleasure.

Sourced from a vineyard planted in 2002 in the Watervale subregion of the Clare Valley, at an altitude of 400m. Winemaker Neil Pike has a special affinity for Watervale Riesling and it feels like a lot of love has gone into this wine.

You're first greeted by delightful aromas of peach and citrus, with a touch of blossom sweetness. The palate is alive with acid and flavour, gliding into a long finish.

This is the type of Riesling that drinks beautifully when young but will also enjoy medium-term cellaring, after which it develops aromas of toast and honey.

"Classic stuff but so even, flavoursome, bright and ready to go despite the youthful nature of the wine at tasting. Touches of florals and oatmeal barely there in the finish too. Stellar stuff."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

"This is so succulent and lovely, with a charge of ‘mineral’ things on a finish of great length. It’s fresh and electric. Yes. And a big yes."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

“The Learnings” Riesling is sourced from the St Clare Gardens “Honey Home Block” which is about 1.5 Km NE of the Watervale (WV) township at 400m elevation. The vines were planted on their own roots in 2002 on beautiful deep, red loam over limestone and red clay – classic “terra rossa” soil.

It drinks well from day one, but is no slouch in the cellar either. With 5-7 years bottle age the wine will develop the classic WV Riesling toast and honey-like characters that lovers of aged Riesling covet.

I have been involved in the making of Watervale Riesling since 1980 and in that time I have learnt a lot of things along the way. I love that I can apply those learnings to this beautiful parcel of single vineyard fruit.

96 points - "From fruit grown on the quirkily named Honey Home Block of St Clare vineyards. There's this pleasing delicate, brittle nature to this wine, which translates through fine, saline minerality, a sense of ultra-pulverised pumice rock and a general tickle of attractive, frisky acidity as a currency. Green apple happens, some lime, some pink grapefruit juice in the mix – classic stuff but so even, flavoursome, bright and ready to go despite the youthful nature of the wine at tasting. Touches of florals and oatmeal barely there in the finish too. Stellar stuff." - Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "It’s a lime and tonic affair here, with lime leaf, lemongrass, and fine chalky texture. It rips and delivers so much lime juice and freshness, kind of essence of Watervale with all that, also a lavender perfume rides high in the wine, and this is so succulent and lovely, with a charge of ‘mineral’ things on a finish of great length. It’s fresh and electric. Yes. And a big yes." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95 points - "Superb Riesling from a Clare Valley hero. That’s it, that’s the takeaway.

Limefinger is Neil Pike’s retirement project, papyrus font and all, with the two wines under this label uniformly great. You’ll want to clear a space for this excellent Limefinger Learnings Watervale Riesling 2024 as well. Sourced from the vineyard around Neil’s home, it’s an uncompromising wine – for one, it’s water clear/ night on colourless. There is way too much supercharged lime fruit here for such light colours. Hat tip, Neil: this is special.

The Learnings smells of lime, cooked lime and a little whisper of florals. Picture perfect super-concentrated palate of, you guessed it, limey intensity hits hard and long, a perfect cover drive to the boundary for four runs. The acidity is firm but not unripe, and that mid-palate generosity is instantly alluring. Touch and go for 96 points, a superstar Riesling that I bloody loved." - Andrew Graham (Oz Wine Review)

Limefinger

After a lifetime dedicated to wine, you would think that an illustrious winemaker such as Neil Pike would want to settle down and drink wine rather than make it. Not so.

Limefinger is his "retirement project", where he grows grapes and sources fruit from trusted growers (solely Riesling), with a clear focus on sustainability at all stages of farming and production.

Given that the focus is on Riesling, it's probably no surprise that the wines on offer are from the Watervale and Polish Hill subregions. The production remains tiny (only a few thousand bottles of each wine) so they're quickly snapped up after release each year.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
