Description

Seventy years on and still kicking goals - Sue Trott’s dry-grown bush vines in Blewitt Springs continue to prove why they’re among McLaren Vale’s finest. Planted in 1952 on deep Maslin Sands and perched 210m above sea level, this single-vineyard Grenache is a pitch-perfect reflection of its site: aromatic, textured, and detailed.

2023 threw some curveballs - wet, windy spring, a cool, late summer - but the Trott vines rose to the occasion. Lower yields meant flavour-packed fruit, and winemaker Renae Hirsch has captured all the nuance and energy of the season with a deft touch. There’s a subtle 10% whole bunch inclusion and a long, gentle ferment before basket pressing and maturation on lees in stainless steel to retain purity and finesse.

It’s all violets, lavender and sage on the nose, with red cherry, citrus peel and earthy spice curling through the palate. The tannins are fine but assertive, drawing out a long, graceful finish.

This is beautiful, thoughtful Grenache that balances perfume and presence - elegance without losing its roots. Perfect for a long lunch (tea-smoked duck, anyone?) or a quiet night in with something vinyl on the turntable.

"It’s lean and athletic through the palate, crouched like a stalking lion, all rippling muscle and fast-twitch fibres."
- Nick Ryan (The Australian)

96 points
"Even at this early stage, there is a deeply meditative quality to the expression, a wine speaking clearly of fruit, place and a beneficial (if difficult) season."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Full bodied and impressively proportioned, balanced and approachable now although will certainly age brilliantly."
- Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

"Medium to full-bodied, a more robust style with chewy tannin, lots of impact and presence, dark spices, raspberry and cranberry brightness, in with more emphatic ferrous things, and a firm finish of excellent length. Quite a wine."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

96 points - “Planted in 1952 close to Blind Spot but at slightly higher elevation, its ancient sands sitting over a limestone base. The fruit is plumper; dark raspberry and cherry, plus some blood sausage meatiness. It’s lean and athletic through the palate, crouched like a stalking lion, all rippling muscle and fast-twitch fibres.” - Nick Ryan (The Australian)

96 points - “Sourced from Sue Trott’s vineyard in Blewitt Springs off dry-grown bush vines planted in ’52; soils are deep Maslin sand over clay and ironstone; 10% whole bunch, the remainder destemmed; 10 days on skins; matured in stainless steel. From a hallowed site, this is a deeply layered expression, though so transparent of making. Fruits flow through red and into black, with some sour plums jostling with the redcurrant jelly and ripe wild-raspberry notes, Baharat spices, bergamot, tamarind paste and warmed star anise. Even at this early stage, there is a deeply meditative quality to the expression, a wine speaking clearly of fruit, place and a beneficial (if difficult) season..” - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - “Deep, bold red-purple clour; smoked meaty reductive nuances over dark fruits and graphite. As it aired in the glass, more blackberry aromas, the palate full-bodied and fruit-sweet in its core, plush and succulent, loaded with charm. Full bodied and impressively proportioned, balanced and approachable now although will certainly age brilliantly.” - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

95 points - “Tasting three Grenache from three different sites, and while they share similar traits, they’re quite different in character, which is very encouraging, and as it should be. This is from 1952 plantings. Ripe cherry, blackberry, black tea, dried herb and floral things, slight menthol. Medium to full-bodied, a more robust style with chewy tannin, lots of impact and presence, dark spices, raspberry and cranberry brightness, in with more emphatic ferrous things, and a firm finish of excellent length. Quite a wine.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

TASTING NOTE

This is an aromatic wine with a bright lifted nose of violets, lavender, hints of sage with dark cherry fruit and exotic spices - cloves and cinnamon, with hints of citrus rind. The palate is tarry and brooding, red currant and cherry with lots of earthy spice, leather and background dried herbs. The tannins are very fine but have a presence and carry the flavours through to a long and lingering finish.

VINTAGE

Weather conditions during spring were wet and windy which had an impact on flowering and resulted in small crops. Cool and wet conditions continued into early summer, but thankfully the rain stopped around Christmas time to allow the fruit to start to ripen and to keep the disease at bay. Harvest started much later than average due to the cooler conditions. Whilst we had to pick some of the reds around rain events they ripened well with fresh and vibrant fruit flavours.

The 23 vintage wines are showing elegance and finesse, with fresh fruit flavours, fine tannins and good acidity.

VINEYARD

A single vineyard Grenache sourced from Sue Trott’s vineyard in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. The Vineyard's dry grown bush vines were planted in 1952 and are grown on deep Maslin Sand over clay and ironstone. Vineyard is situated at 210m above sea level on an East facing slope.

WINEMAKING

Fruit was hand harvested, 10% whole bunch, remainder destemmed into stainless steel open fermenters. The ferment spent 12 days on skins, during which time it was gently plunged to ensure optimum extraction whilst maintaining the delicate aromatics. Wine was basket pressed off skins before maturation and malolactic fermentation on lees in stainless steel to retain fruit purity and freshness.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
