Description

This is the perfect casual red for any night of the week! Crafted by winemaker Michael Corbett, this wine combines Shiraz, Mataro, and Grenache into a smooth, easy-drinking experience.

The 2023 Divergent S.M.G. features 48% Shiraz, 42% Grenache, and 10% Mataro, mostly sourced from three local Barossa growers, with the rest from Whistler’s own organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards. This blend showcases the strengths of each varietal: Shiraz contributes blue fruits and spice, Mataro adds structure and earthiness, and Grenache brings an abundance of juicy red fruits.

In the winemaking process, each variety was harvested separately at optimal ripeness, destemmed in the vineyard, and underwent whole berry, natural fermentation in open fermenters. Gentle twice-daily pump-overs ensured a soft extraction of colour, with the wine then maturing in French oak for four months before blending.

Juicy and a little earthy, think blue and red fruits and an almost meaty undertone. It's the perfect BBQ or pizza wine and can even be enjoyed slightly chilled, it's a great value, easy, enjoyable drinking Barossa bargain.

"This is a kind of rustic, almost a natty sort of Beaujolais character to it... Lots of character, and quite different to your usual Barossa GSM." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

"Juicy and bouncy with a real meaty, rusty, medina-spicy edge that is very appealing indeed." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

Story Behind The Label

The butterfly is a symbol for transformation and this blend certainly changes year-to-year. Like an artist, our winemaker classifies our fruit each vintage designating each parcel to its best home. The triad represents the varietals, Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro that work together to produce a wonderfully balanced wine.

The Fruit

This wine is made up of 48% Shiraz, 42% Grenache and 10% Mataro, mostly sourced from 3 local Barossa growers with the remaining grown here on our vineyards surrounding our Whistler Cellar Door. We have been running our vineyard using organic practices since August 2013, and biodynamic practices since July 2017.

Winemaking

The Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro were all harvested separately, when each variety was at optimum ripeness. All three varieties were destemmed in the vineyard, and whole berry, natural fermentation was allowed to commence. Fermentation took place in open fermenters and were then gently pumped over, twice daily, to achieve gentle extraction of colour. Once each variety reached dryness, they were pressed and put to French oak for 4 months. Each variety was kept separate until it was blended just prior to bottling. No fining agents were used, so this wine is Vegan friendly.

The Wine

This wine is designed to be an easy drinking red wine that over delivers for the price. The Shiraz component gives the wine a nice blue fruit character and good depth of flavour, the Grenache shows plenty of juicy red fruits and the Mataro gives the wine structure and an earthy character. This is the perfect BBQ wine, and works extremely well chilled in warmer weather.

93 points - "This is a kind of rustic, almost a natty sort of Beaujolais character to it with its meaty/gamey/bloody character. There’s some floral perfume here too, cherry and raspberry. It’s medium-bodied, silky and silty tannin, cool acidity, and again quite meaty, with a finish of good length and spiced cherries. Lots of character, and quite different to your usual Barossa GSM." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

93 points - "A funky red blend of shiraz (48%), grenache (42%) and mataro (10%) that sports a wild-eyed stare of souk-like spice and drying mountain herbs that flutter over the primary fruit tones of blueberry, cranberry and mulberry. Hints of crushed granite, a whiff of tar, something meaty and hearty, pressed wildflowers and beef stock. Juicy and bouncy with a real meaty, rusty, medina-spicy edge that is very appealing indeed." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
