Description

For under $20, the 2023 Tahbilk Marsanne delivers outstanding value for one of Australia’s most-loved white wines. This fresh, vibrant Marsanne is a brilliant example of why it’s been a staple on wine shelves for decades, offering pretty serious quality (and cellaring potential) without the hefty price tag.

Tahbilk has been making Marsanne since the 1860s, and today holds the largest single vineyard of this Northern Rhone variety in the world. The 2023 vintage packs in all the hallmarks—zesty lemon, tropical fruit, and a crisp, mineral finish. It’s lively, versatile, and an easy match for everything from seafood to lighter Mediterranean and Asian dishes.

Recently named one of the Top 100 Wines of 2024 by the Halliday Wine Companion, this wine is a real gem for the price. Enjoy it now for its fresh, clean flavours or cellar it to unlock deeper, richer layers in a few years’ time.

Affordable, approachable, and absolutely delicious—it’s hard to go wrong with the 2023 Tahbilk Marsanne.

95 points & Top 100 Wines of 2024
"With extensive flooding and low yields, it is easy to see the 2023 Nagambie Lakes vintage as problematic. Shut your eyes, open your tastebuds, and there is life here and brightness of fruit and energy. Spring blossoms come to mind, the pure scent of honeysuckle and citrus. It's an early bloomer – or so it appears just before release – immediate and attractive right now (late Dec) in lemon sorbet tang, green apple and quince delivered with an emerging texture. Gotta say, I am enjoying it now, but I know what Tahbilk unwooded marsanne is capable of with bottle ageing. Never to be underestimated."
- Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

One of the world’s rarest grape varieties with its origins in the Northern Rhone and Hermitage regions of France, Tahbilk has some of the oldest vines and largest single holding of Marsanne in the world.

Tahbilk’s history with Marsanne can be traced back to the 1860’s with the sourcing of ‘White Hermitage’ cuttings from the ‘St Huberts’ Vineyard in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. The cuttings were in fact Marsanne but sadly none of these plantings have survived. The Estate still does however produce Marsanne from vines established in 1927 – some of the oldest in the world.

Tahbilk Marsanne has a dedicated global following due to its thrilling character and appeal as a young wine with intense lemon, citrus and tropical fruits on a crisp mineral edged finish.

It’s proven ability to develop added complexity and character if cellared, when rich honeysuckle and citrus marmalade characters come to the fore, has led to the Purbrick family to set aside small quantities of each vintage to be then made available when bottle-aged.
As a young wine Marsanne is very much a 'universal-soldier' when it comes to food matches but certainly light Mediterranean and Asian dishes would be well up that list.
As it ages then its more full-bodied character would lend itself very well to richer and deeper flavoured white meat and seafood curries and stews.

Vintage 2023
At Tahbilk, we like to say that every bottle tells a story, so in that case, the stories behind Vintage 2023 will be some of the most dramatic.
In October 2022, Tahbilk Estate bore the brunt of a 1 in 100-year flood, which affected our vines, impacted yields, and affected us, the Tahbilk team. Our vines have bounced back, thankfully with no long-term damage and minimal, if any attrition. In fact, if you walk around today you couldn’t tell that over half of the vineyard had been under water. As for the team, this challenge will ultimately make us stronger.

Then, as with every season, we were presented with a ‘normal’ set of issues around the weather, adding further to our taxing season. The summer’s heat came quickly, and the ground once full of water was dry again, so we irrigated. Then the rain came, we stopped irrigating and waited for the weather to pass.
It then became cool, the length of the season caught up with us, and not everything ripened so sadly we ended up leaving fruit on the vines … including our iconic 1860 Shiraz!

The yields for the season, albeit low, have produced some very fine wines that embody the demands of this season, wines that we are extremely proud of and proud to share.
So, when you are lucky enough to drink a Tahbilk wine from the 2023 season, think of the season, and think of us.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
