Description

Scorpo’s Noirien Pinot Noir is everything you want in a Mornington Peninsula Pinot - bright, juicy, and just a little bit savoury.

Sourced from two north-facing sites in Merricks North, the 2023 vintage saw a slow, steady ripening season, bringing both freshness and depth. Hand-picked over two weeks, the fruit was treated in four parcels - some cold-soaked, some whole bunch - before spending seven months in mostly seasoned French oak (just 11% new).

The result? A Pinot that balances red and dark berries with a distinctly savoury edge of olive and brown spice. The tannins have a gentle grip, the acidity keeps things lively, and there’s a subtle amaro-like bitterness that adds intrigue to the long, dry finish.

An easy, food-friendly drink now, but with enough structure to develop in the short term. A solid go-to for those who like their Pinot with a bit of character.

92 points - "Dark cherry, earthy, quite some orange peel amaro type things happening too, along with some brown spice and fennel. It’s fleshy and juicy, offers some gustatory bitterness, ripe strawberry, chicory, a grainy grip to tannin, with a saline and savoury finish of good length. Distinctive wine. Different, but good." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

92 points - "One of the excellent go-to pinots on the Peninsula thanks to its core of tangy, juicy fruit and fresh appeal. It’s a little savoury, spicy with tangy fruit and puckering acidity matched to the light pull of the tannins before finishing dry. Nice drinking here." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

    Great value

Really good alternative to the more expensive Scorpo Pinot. Has subtle lifted fruit on the palette and just barely there tannins. I drink a lot of this :-)

The fruit for the 2023 Noirien Pinot Noir was grown on two north-facing slopes on a property that we manage adjacent to the Scorpo Estate Vineyard in Merricks North. The cooler than average 2023 season resulted in each block being picked slightly later than average, despite their tiny yields, which varied from 2.3 to 3.3 tonnes/hectare (equivalent to about 1 tonne/acre across all blocks). Divided up into 4 parcels, the fruit was picked over 2 weeks, between March 11th and March 26th; three parcels were cold-soaked for several days prior to fermentation in open fermenters, whilst one parcel was fermented as whole bunches. After pressing, followed by 7 months of maturation in mostly older French oak barriques (11% new), all barriques were racked and blended, prior to bottling without filtration in early December, 2023.

Whilst some vintages tend to highlight either brighter red, or darker fruit characters, this 2023 release of Noirien seems to encapsulate both spectrums, creating a rather intriguing Pinot Noir. The influence of whole bunch is evident on the nose with lovely fruit lift, as well as on the palate, whilst underlying this there is some more brooding dark cherry, plum and olive fruit flavours. As a young wine, the tannins have a certain presence and add a savoury touch, but the fruit weight, especially once it starts to open up, is more than ample to carry them confidently.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
