Description

The Rocket started as an accident - one rogue ferment that took off with more energy than the rest. Michael Downer liked where it went, so he bottled it separately, and a new cuvée was born. Since then, The Rocket has become one of the most distinct expressions in Murdoch Hill’s Artisan range - a Chardonnay that leans hard into precision, drive, and the edgier side of the Adelaide Hills.

The fruit comes from Lenswood, a high, cool site that gives the wine its cut and linearity. Downer runs with it - wild ferment, full malo, careful solids work, and some well-judged oak. There’s plenty of texture, but the wine never feels heavy. Instead, it’s tightly wound, flinty, and full of quiet tension. The 2023 release carries that signature grip and focus, shaped by a long, cool vintage that suited the style to a tee.

It’s a wine for those who like their Chardonnay coiled and contemplative, with a few rough edges in the best possible way.

"Sleek, sophisticated and sexy chardonnay with white peach, creamed wild honey, flinty funk and electrifying acidity. A rocket ride worth taking."
- Nick Ryan (The Weekend Australian Magazine)

"Lemon confit, oyster shell, chalk and candied lime meet pineapple, green apple skin and grapefruit pith. Tightly constructed, balanced and vibrant."
- Ned Goodwin MW (jamessuckling.com)

95 points
"Texturally brilliant with chalky grip, mineral sherbet tingle, lemon, grapefruit, white stone fruits and raw cashew. Nuanced and complex."
- Katrina Butler (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Tightly wound and energetic with green apple, pink grapefruit, lime, flint and talc. Pulverised rock minerality and svelte texture. Refreshing and pure."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

97 points - "The Downer family has been farming around Oakbank since 1939, and the decision to plant vines 60 years later may have been the best move they ever made. This is chardonnay out on the town and dressed to kill. Sleek, sophisticated and sexy. There’s fragrant white peaches and creamed wild honey, a wisp of flinty funk and an electrifying acid line. Give me this ‘Rocket’ over Bezos or Musk any day." - Nick Ryan (The Weekend Australian Magazine)

96 points - "Powerful aromas of lemon confit, minerals, oyster shells, chalk and candied lime zest. The plate is medium-bodied with underlying power framed by focused acidity, giving notes of fresh pineapple, green apple skin and grapefruit pith. Exceptionally well balanced and tightly constructed. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Ned Goodwin MW (jamessuckling.com)

95 points - "An important wine for the region and site, estate grown in Lenswood. 100% mlf and 50% new oak in both French and Hungarian small and large format oak. Texturally brilliant with a chalky, crushed aspirin-like texture, it melds and relents under the brightness of fruit, leaving only a mineral sherbet tingle behind. Lemon and grapefruit, white stone fruits, raw cashew and nougat, too. There is a softness here that begs for pause, so take some time to appreciate its multifaceted nuance and complexity." - Katrina Butler (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "Made on Earth by Humans, as the back label says, and don’t you forget it. It’s tightly wound and compact. A super svelte and textural experience with big energy and chewy, pulverised rock minerality and tension. Firm in a way, and pleasingly so, an inward concentration and drive of succulence and refreshing nature. Green apple galore on the just ripe spectrum, some pink grapefruit, lime, flint and talc too. It soars and begins to spread a little with time too. It’s a wine of serious feel, huge washes of refreshment and glorious fruit purity. Perhaps just a little less multidimensional as its recent past, but right up there and epic as such." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Opened June 2024. Gunpowder bonanza. Not sure what the hype was all about. Putting this one in the cellar for 5-8 years.

Our 7th release, The 2023 Rocket Chardonnay from the elevated terroir of Lenswood, navigating a cool and measured vintage. Subtle white stone fruit notes orbit alongside hints of candle wax, grilled hazelnuts, and a spark of flint, creating an intriguing, layered nose. On the palate, refreshing citrus cuts through with laser-like precision, steering towards melon and crystalline quince. Full malolactic fermentation and judicious oak integration provide gravity and texture, with a fine pithy edge grounding the wine's structure. This cosmic Chardonnay is poised for lift-off, drinking beautifully in its youth, but destined to evolve and expand with time in the bottle.

Murdoch Hill

Murdoch Hill is a family-owned winery captained by talented young winemaker Michael Downer.

Downer splits the range in two: his clean-cut, consistently high-quality ‘Estate’ wines are excellent value and perpetually reliable, and his quirky, adventurous ‘Artisan’ wines which offer an alt-styling and different shades of the region.

With the combination of high-quality Adelaide Hills fruit grown on the family estate and the undoubted talent in the winery, this is a Hills producer on the up and up!

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
