Description

Mewstone is making some of the most exciting Pinot in Tasmania right now, and the 2023 release is another cracker. Grown on a north-facing slope overlooking the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, this is cool-climate Pinot with brightness, depth, and just the right amount of edge.

Hand-picked in April, the fruit was naturally fermented with some whole bunches in the mix, then spent ten months in French oak (35% new). It’s all about juicy red fruits—sour cherry, cranberry, and plum—layered with spice, amaro, and a flicker of something flinty. Silky tannins give it shape, but there’s still loads of freshness and energy.

Drinks beautifully now, but has the bones to go the distance. If you love Tassie Pinot, this one’s well worth a look.

"A real sense of space and layered spice on the palate. Sour cherry, cranberry, and red plum fruits abound, and there is plenty of energy and drinking enjoyment to be had here."

"Beautiful composure to this wine. It feels cool but it also feels ripe, its forest berry flavours laced with sweet herbs, its tannin firm but velvety. It has this 'I’ve got this' sense to it... It is, in short, very good."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

95 points – "While a wine drinker never has to search hard for a maritime influence in Tasmanian wine, Mewstone's 600m of D'Entrecasteaux Channel frontage sure takes some beating. Lightly coloured and wild-eyed with oodles of bunchy complexity in the way of twiggy, struck flint, and amaro tones. A real sense of space and layered spice on the palate. Sour cherry, cranberry, and red plum fruits abound, and there is plenty of energy and drinking enjoyment to be had here." – Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points – "Beautiful composure to this wine. It feels cool but it also feels ripe, its forest berry flavours laced with sweet herbs, its tannin firm but velvety. It has this 'I’ve got this' sense to it. It’s aromatic and refreshing, light-ish, squeaky clean to smell and taste but a bit murky to look at, the latter of which is a good way for a wine to be. Sweet beetroot, red cherry, undergrowth, and twig notes blossom as the wine breathes. It is, in short, very good." – Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Grapes grown at Mewstone vineyard were hand picked on the 9th and 19th of April at an average of 12.5 baume. They were naturally fermented with 25 percent whole bunch (this varied across the ferments, from zero to 55%). They received minimal pumpovers before being pressed after 21 days. They were matured in french oak (35% new) for ten months. 3096 bottles produced without fining or filtration.

Mewstone

Mewstone Wines is a joint venture between Jonny and Matt Hughes, two Tasmanian born wine-heads, and their respective wives Margie and Cathie.

The two families have invested in a small plot of land on the banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in the charmingly named locality of Flowerpot, on the south-eastern tip of Tasmania. Matt works the grapes, Jonny makes the wines, taking what he learnt from seven years as assistant winemaker at Moorilla and re-imagining it for his own label.

The Hughes & Hughes wines offer some of the best value to be found in Tasmania at the moment, and the Mewstone premium range focuses on exceptional single-vineyard wines made in a style that Jonny wants to drink. James Halliday called them, "an utterly exceptional wine producer". Keep an eye on this ambitious pair as their star continues to rise.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
