Description

Nic Peterkin's star is on the rise. He forms part of the New Guard of WA wine, blazing a new trail for the West.

With deep family roots in Margaret River wine and a lifetime spent surrounded by some of the finest examples of Margaret River Chardonnay, Nic has a keen eye for quality fruit and has his own take on style for the Great White Grape of Margaret River.

Here, Nic takes fruit from a 25 year old vineyard in the heart of Wilyabrup, the epicentre of top-flight Chardonnay for this region. He then lets it ferment in clay amphoras in a range of sizes, giving complexity and depth to the wine. It's a pure expression of Margaret River Chardonnay, stone fruity, citrus, with a hint of flintiness and beautiful texture.

"Generous smoky/flinty reduction overlying ripe grapefruit aromas—a classic Gin Gin clone wine. Superb fruit: very regional and very Gin Gin. Powerful flavour teamed with refinement and penetrating length. A real finesse chardonnay and quite superb."

"A beauty to sniff on. Flavours sway between limey margaritas, tonic, sweet lemon and light gingery spice. It’s got this pleasing saline, talc and briny chew to it too. Really good drinking here."

"Smells of a lime daiquiri – salty, tangy yet waxy, textural and flavoursome. Riper in style, in terms of fruit weight, with white nectarine/peach to the fore and grapefruit, too.... It lingers, it’s complex, detailed and as compelling as it is delicious."

"The wine is opulently styled and quite ripe, but it works... There is something quite grown-up/sophisticated about the wines from this vintage, and it shows in this wine."

95 points - "A very lively chardonnay, set to medium weight, a strong sense of minerality running through the wine. Scents of ozone, sea spray, margaritas with salt rims, tonic water and bay leaf. A beauty to sniff on. Flavours sway between limey margaritas, tonic, sweet lemon and light gingery spice. It’s got this pleasing saline, talc and briny chew to it too. 95 points - "Smells of a lime daiquiri – salty, tangy yet waxy, textural and flavoursome. Riper in style, in terms of fruit weight, with white nectarine/peach to the fore and grapefruit, too. Some funky sulphides, all smoky and flinty, creamy, light lees and a savouriness throughout yet there’s a slip of sweetness from the oak with warm spices, too. It lingers, it’s complex, detailed and as compelling as it is delicious." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "The 2023 Wildberry Springs Chardonnay is ripe and full flavored, with yellow peach, lemon verbena, preserved citrus rind and salted cashews. The palate is threaded together with saline acidity and exotic dry spices—saffron, fennel seeds and cheesecloth/lanolin. The wine is opulently styled and quite ripe, but it works. Usually, these wines are lower in alcohol, but in the context of this dry, mild season, the ripeness sits well within the wine. There is something quite grown-up/sophisticated about the wines from this vintage, and it shows in this wine." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

Sitting in the heart of Willyabrup, growing on rich gravelly loam soils, this 25 year old vineyard is immaculate, with no vines out of place, it's almost perfect. It took a few years of begging to be able to pick fruit from this vineyard.

Hand picked first thing in the morning, chilled overnight, whole bunch pressed and fermented/ matured in 50% amphora of different shapes and sizes. We hope that the different sized vessels of different porosity provide differing fermentation kinetics and oxygen uptake into the wine. Providing complexity and depth in the same way different oak barrels are used. The remaining 50% is fermented and aged in oak barrels to provide familiarity and structure. A partial natural malolactic fermentation occured during its time in vessel softening the edges of the wine and providing length and depth.

Purity is the word that I think everytime I try this wine. Purity and elegance. Pure flavours of Willyabrup chardonnay, peach lemon, lime, green apple, a touch of cream and a hint of flint

L.A.S. Vino

Nic Peterkin’s blood runs red with Margaret River wine.

The son of Pierro founder, Dr Mike Peterkin and Shelly Cullen, of you guessed it, Cullen wines fame, the force is strong with this one. His wines are out there, challenging the status quo of one of the country’s most respected wine-producing regions. This is the “New Guard” of Margaret River, and the wines are coming out all guns blazing.

Nic is playing with some varieties off the beaten path of classic Margaret River. The Chardonnays and Chenin Blancs are stellar, as is the Cabernet but the likes of Touriga Nacional and Sousao all find a home amongst his eye-catching range.

There's some serious substance to his project, being named as the 2016 Gourmet Traveller Young Winemaker of the Year for his eclectic and tantalising releases and recently named the Dark Horse of the Year at the 2023 Halliday Wine Companion Awards. Nic is one of the most creative and boundary-pushing winemakers in the country, without question. His Margaret River range is truly unlike anything else you will find in Australia.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
