Description

The Jim Barry Florita Riesling has long been one of the Clare Valley's most collected white wines, and the 2023 release is an absolute classic.

The Florita Vineyard, located in the heart of Watervale, is one of the Clare Valley’s most revered sites. Originally planted in 1962 for the legendary Leo Buring Rieslings, the vineyard was acquired by the Barry family in 1986. Since then, it has been the source of some of their most celebrated Rieslings. The 2023 release, made from carefully selected grapes from the vineyard’s best rows, is a standout.

On the nose, it offers a captivating bouquet of lime cordial, nashi pear, and jasmine, with hints of slate and wild fennel. The palate is precise and vibrant, with layers of green apple, ginger, and pink grapefruit tightly woven into a mineral-driven structure.

While this Riesling is already delicious, its true potential will unfold with time, making it an excellent candidate for cellaring. A must-buy for the Riesling collectors out there.

"It has intensity, drive and a sense of precision with a serious line of granite and slate-like mineral character crystalline and brilliant through the wine. The perfume is enticing with apple, jasmine and warm slate scents in play. Flavours of green apple, ginger and pink grapefruit are a beautiful medley woven in tight layers through this compact and energetic wine."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

"...layered with elderflower and beeswax, jasmine and even a hint of honeysuckle. It is tremendously floral on the nose. In the mouth, the wine is talc-y and textural, and it spools across the palate. It's a fabulous wine, distinct, with a proven pedigree of graceful aging. Excellent."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

"This is perhaps the finest Florita I can recall. Notes of lime cordial are assuaged by a grind of white pepper, nashi and Granny Smith granita, a lilt of wild fennel and a spurt of gin and tonic with a squeeze of lemon across the endless finish. A Clare Valley thoroughbred built for patience and a dark cellar. "
- Ned Goodwin (James Suckling)

"Tight, stony, slight spiciness like ginger, a little floral. Very pure and refined, lovely crunch and energy on a long finish, offering a little pink grapefruit. All just so. Time will be very kind. An excellent release."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Florita’ is Spanish for ‘little flower’. Located fifteen kilometres south of Clare township in the tiny village of Watervale, the famous Riesling vineyard was planted to Palamino in 1946 for making Fino Sherry, and replanted to Riesling in 1962. The birthplace of Leo Buring Watervale Riesling, Florita was where legendary winemaker John Vickery sourced his grapes for his great Watervale Rieslings of the 1960s and 1970s. The 80-acre vineyard was sold by globally-owned multi-national company, Lindeman's to brother's Mark, Peter and John Barry in 1986.

First released as the 'Florita Riesling' in 2004 by Jim Barry Wines, this micro-batch Riesling is made from grapes hand-selected from individual rows. Its best fruit comes from vines planted in shallow loamy soils and the vineyard has good air-drainage which alleviates the risk of frost

96 points - "The Florita vineyard was established in 1962 by famed riesling maker Leo Buring. The Barry family acquired the esteemed site in 1986. Carrying on from the excellent 2022 Florita Riesling, this is an outstanding release. It has intensity, drive and a sense of precision with a serious line of granite and slate-like mineral character crystalline and brilliant through the wine. The perfume is enticing with apple, jasmine and warm slate scents in play. Flavours of green apple, ginger and pink grapefruit are a beautiful medley woven in tight layers through this compact and energetic wine. It feels decidedly delicious to drink now, an experience in some respects, but cellaring will surely yield exceptional rewards." - Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

Very pure and refined, lovely crunch and energy on a long finish, offering a little pink grapefruit. All just so. Time will be very kind. An excellent release." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Jim Barry

Jim Barry Wines is a family affair in the Clare Valley.

Founded by one of SA's most influential wine figures, this producer has been one of the most acclaimed in the region since it began in 1974.

They focus primarily on traditional Clare Valley varieties, with a myriad of laser-sharp Rieslings, powerful Shiraz and intense Cabernet blends making up the foundations of the range. With a sprawling range including everything from super-premium to top value, they are considered a cornerstone of the Clare with classic wines that develop beautifully in the cellar given time.

Now, with the third generation of Barrys - Sam, Tom and Olivia - now in charge of the winemaking, marketing and business development, there is a new energy about the brand and there are plenty of exciting new things on the horizon.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
