Description

Halliday Wine Companion's Winery of the Year!
"Giant Steps, right now, breathes rare air. It’s been an outstanding winery for a long time, but the combination of energy and expertise – and no doubt plenty more besides – that winemaker Melanie Chester has brought since she arrived at the winery in November 2021 has frankly been breathtaking... In short, it’s a thrilling range to drink from."
- Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Applejack Vineyard, established in 1997 by acclaimed viticulturist Ray Guerin and located in the cool climes of Gladysdale in the upper Yarra Valley, is renowned for its quality Pinot Noirs but is now making a name for its exceptional Chardonnays too, such as this beauty from Giant Steps.

The 2023 vintage was marked by one of the coolest growing seasons on record, leading to a late harvest that benefited from mild temperatures and ample rainfall. This wine is crafted from handpicked grapes, whole-bunch pressed and transferred directly to French oak puncheons without settling. The wild fermentation and careful maturation for nine months in seasoned barrels result in a Chardonnay with a pristine expression of place.

On the nose, the wine offers an enticing bouquet of stone fruits, lemon rind, and a hint of grilled nuts. The palate is tightly wound and vibrant, with flavours of white peach, apple, and a subtle brininess, all balanced by piercing natural acidity.

Limited in availability, Applejack is a wine not to be missed by lovers of refined and expressive Victorian Chardonnay.

"The palate is tightly coiled, steely, saline and focused. A wine with excellent potential."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Anything Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir can do, Applejack Chardonnay can do just as well. This is a ripping chardonnay... There’s some dare to the acidity but it brings flavour with it; it took the risk and it turned out, the reward was worth it. This is an advanced level wine. You drink it, and you know all you need to know."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

97 points - "A focused, sharp line of citrus flavours and aromas is driven by clean, crisp acidity, with tightly wound lemon and sharp green apple notes propelled by measured power. The Chardonnay I10V1 vine clones from this steep, 280m-high site demand different treatment – no malolactic fermentation, no battonage of lees during fermentation in mostly older French oak barrels, then nine months’ maturation. This is just enough to add a savory rim and a hint of roasted hazelnut to the smooth palate line, without intruding on a clean, crisp finish. It’s clean, confident and assured." - David Sly (Decenter)

96 points - "Anything Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir can do, Applejack Chardonnay can do just as well. This is a ripping chardonnay. It has fruit power up its sleeve and in its wrist bands and everywhere else. And yet it’s tight. And stony. Shot with white peach. And run with apple, sweet cedar, brine and the wet leaves of a lemon tree. There’s some dare to the acidity but it brings flavour with it; it took the risk and it turned out, the reward was worth it. This is an advanced level wine. You drink it, and you know all you need to know." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

96 points - "Applejack vineyard was planted at Gladysdale by Ray Guerin in 1997, and only 2ha of its 11ha is planted to chardonnay. It is named for the Applejack eucalypts that surround it. Whole-bunch pressed straight to barrel with full solids and matured in mainly second use puncheons. A very bright green gold. A pure and gently reticent bouquet of stone fruits, lemon verbena and crushed rocks. The palate is tightly coiled, steely, saline and focused. A wine with excellent potential." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

SEASON:

2023 was a small, high-quality vintage in the Yarra Valley. The season was defined by a cool Spring, a mild growing season, coolvnights, and medium to high rainfall.
2023 was one of the coolest and latest harvests on record, with our first pick starting two and a half weeks later than the previous average. The grapes in 2023 had lovely fruit concentration with bright natural acidities.

VINIFICATION:

100% handpicked and whole bunch pressed.
The juice was then transferred directly to barrel by gravity with no settling, taking full lees.
Wild fermented in 500L French oak puncheons.
No bâtonnage. No Malolactic fermentation.
Maturation for 9 months in used French oak – 25% 2nd use, 75% seasoned, Mercurey, Taransaud and Dargaud & Jaeglé.

THE VINEYARD:

Location: Gladysdale

Planted: 1997

Elevation: 180 - 260 metres

Soil type: Grey clay loam over black (basalt) volcanic base

Aspect: East facing slopes

Size: 12.5 Hectares

Applejack Vineyard is a special site, located on a dramatic slope in the
upper Yarra Valley and is closely planted and fastidiously managed.
It was planted by respected viticulturist Ray Guerin in 1997.
The basalt based underlying volcanic soil and rock produce a
characteristically fine yet extended, spicy and firm palate.

The higher altitude results in a cooler and extended growing season, ideally suited to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (3-4 weeks later than central Yarra Valley).

Chardonnay from Applejack requires lots of attention to detail in the
vineyard, with focus put on crop loads and fruit exposure to ensure even
ripeness and acid levels.
This chardonnay is savoury, with lovely notes of lemon rind and grilled
nuts.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
