Description

When it comes to crafting Chardonnay, Gareth Belton has truly hit his stride, and the 2023 Ashton Chardonnay is a shining example of his laid-back yet meticulous approach. This is the sixth release from his tiny 0.8-hectare block in Ashton, where the vines soak up the sun from a northerly aspect and dig deep into clay-rich soils mixed with quartz and schist. Of the three, this is the Chardonnay that has a bit more flesh than Gareth’s other single-vineyard offerings, though still decidedly on the on the elegant end of the Chardonnay spectrum.

The 2023 vintage was a cool one, which has given this wine a wonderful balance. There’s an immediate hit of stone fruit—think juicy peaches and nectarines—backed by a fine, zingy acidity that keeps it fresh and lively. It’s all about texture and depth here, but without the weight that sometimes bogs down richer Chardonnays. Gareth’s approach is simple: whole bunch pressed, settled overnight, then left undisturbed in French and Austrian oak (20% new) for 11 months to let the vineyard speak for itself.

This is a Chardonnay for those who appreciate nuance—a wine that shows a bit of generosity now but will only become more complex with age. With just 932 bottles produced, it’s a rare gem, offering a snapshot of what makes Ashton such a special site in the Adelaide Hills. If you’re looking for a wine that marries bold flavours with finesse, the 2023 Ashton Chardonnay has your name on it.

"A rich, delicious wine. Délice liberally spread on honey toast. Walnut and spiced quince with some bacon fat, too. The gravity and weight of its fruit – white nectarine, candied melon and waxy lime – ensures a slow and low sashay across the palate. Muslin-like phenolic grip and vibrant lemony sorbet stitch seams over and through, leaving the recipient with little patience between sips."

"Heady aromas of nougat, white stone fruit, ripe melon, grilled nuts, bacon fat and panforte. Creamy, mouth-filling, textured and with plenty of layers of flavour. Lashings of peach, nectarine, nutty oak, cream and sweet spice. Long, complex and with plenty of sophistication and drive."

95 points - "From 28-year-old vines in Ashton. The wine sees 11 months in French and Austrian oak, 28% new. A rich, delicious wine. Délice liberally spread on honey toast. Walnut and spiced quince with some bacon fat, too. The gravity and weight of its fruit – white nectarine, candied melon and waxy lime – ensures a slow and low sashay across the palate. Muslin-like phenolic grip and vibrant lemony sorbet stitch seams over and through, leaving the recipient with little patience between sips. It’s on the precipice of being perceived as flashy, but it walks its line with temerity and unquestionable certainty." - Katrina Butler (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "Quite waxy and yet vibrant and fresh, a kind of cumquat sweet-sour going on with light marzipan notes, vanilla cream, faint cinnamon and clove and general sweet spice elements, a lick of corn and light butter in there too. It’s a meditative wine, a touch of ripeness in the mix of things that sort of pokes out or rolls over the fresh, mandarin-like acidity. It’s one that the flavour hounds will find comely, with a general open weave and pulpy softness as it rolls on. Lots of charm." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

The sixth release from our 0.8 ha block in Ashton where the northerly aspect and deep clay soils result in a wine with boldness and texture. It’s not just about the bold flavours though, there is a beautiful stone fruit character and a great acid line from a very cool growing season.

Gentle Folk

Gareth and Rainbo Belton are the Gentle Folks, both in name and in sensibility. They are gentle, soulful people, both originally seaweed experts, who turned their hands to farming grapes with an organic and sustainable approach. Today they are crafting some of the most legitimately exciting and exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Adelaide Hills and are firmly rooted in the upper echelon of Australia's lo-fi wine scene.

Their wines cover multiple sub-regions across the Adelaide Hills. There are no additions during the winemaking process, save for a splash of SO2 at bottling to keep the wines pristine as they travel from the Beltons' home to yours. The worlds of fine wine and natural wine collide in the Gentle Folk range. They are beautiful people making increasingly breathtaking wines that you definitely want to check out.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
