Description

The 2023 Garagiste Terre Maritime Chardonnay is the pinnacle of Barney Flanders' Chardonnay offerings, sitting alongside the Terre de Feu Pinot Noir as a flagship release. Sourced from the highest part of the Merricks vineyard, this wine showcases the exceptional intensity and power of its unique terroir.

The fruit for this Chardonnay comes from a special plot of 27-year-old vines rooted in brown soils at 90 meters elevation, facing slightly east. This cooler, sheltered aspect results in less vigorous vines and smaller bunches, yielding fruit with remarkable intensity and finesse.

In the low-yielding 2023 season, Barney had just one puncheon of this precious fruit to work with. The grapes were whole-bunch pressed and fermented in a 500-litre puncheon, followed by nine months of maturation on gross lees. The result is a Chardonnay that offers a pure expression of its unique site and vintage.

Expect a wine that is salty, chalky, and complex with a long finish. This Terre Maritime Chardonnay is a sensational release from this benchmark Mornington Peninsula producer. This is a must-have for Chardonnay enthusiasts. Don’t hesitate—this will sell out quickly.

97 points & Top 100 Wines of 2024
"The finest chardonnay on the peninsula this vintage and always up there as one of the best. Spine-tingling, complex, detailed and superfine. Pure fruited, zesty citrus, juicy acidity, perfect oak and lees balance, the palate energised and finishes long. It’s something else. It’ll sell out in a flash – be quick."

"Maritime all right. This is all salt spray and samphire, a little bit smoky and reductive, pear and lime, some jasmine and spiced pasty dough. It’s bright and tangy, orange and salted pistachio, ginger biscuits, zesty with a fine chalky texture, and a finish of excellent length. Maybe a little bit of Parmesan rind umami stuff, and custard apple richness. It’s an unusual style of Chardonnay, and maybe a little off-kilter, but gee it’s a compelling drink."

The Terre Maritime is drawn from several rows of Chardonnay in the top corner of Merricks Grove. Barney Flanders has always felt this parcel could result in a superb and unique Chardonnay—in this part of the vineyard, the 26-year-old vines are rooted in brown soils rather than the more common reddish dirt of the area. The parcel also faces slightly east, offering the vines a cooler, more sheltered aspect. There’s therefore less vigour here than in the rest of the vineyard and the bunches are a touch smaller. As a result, the fruit from this parcel tends to make a wine that has real intensity without forgoing the finesse we associate with Garagiste Chardonnay. It was raised in large, seasoned oak.
This is another fabulous Chardonnay, with a captivating bouquet of orange citrus and orchard fruits, chalky minerality, white florals and perfectly pitched smoky reduction. The palate has a potent core; power, density and fleshy weight are matched by coiled acidity, phenolic grip and a long-reaching, spicy, savoury finish. In a word: exceptional.

Garagiste Wines

The Garagiste wines by Barnaby Flanders are a masterclass in small-batch excellence from Mornington Peninsula. Driven by a passion for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Flanders delves into the peninsula’s sub-regions, harnessing subtle variations in soil and aspect to craft wines of remarkable character.

Since launching in 2006, Garagiste has become a Victorian standout, celebrated for single-site, sub-regional expressions. From Tuerong’s sandy soils to Main Ridge’s rich volcanic earth, Flanders sources responsibly farmed parcels to shape his distinctive wines.

Central to the Garagiste story is Merricks Grove vineyard, where Flanders’ winemaking journey began in 2000. His hands-on approach ensures every detail, from vineyard management to cellar work, delivers wines of precision and nuance. The philosophy is all about balance: picking for acidity, whole bunch pressing for Chardonnay, and natural ferments with restrained oak use. The result? Elegant, complex wines that rank among the peninsula’s finest.

Together with partner Cam, Flanders produces both Garagiste’s cool-climate flagship wines and the superb-value Le Stagiaire range. Whether it’s their textured Pinots or taut Chardonnays, these wines embody the craftsmanship of one of Mornington’s best.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
