Description

After a long and decorated career at Barossa icon Turkey Flat, Mark Bulman has struck out on his own with a stunning new set of wines that have jumped straight to 'must-have' status for those following the rise of premium Australian Grenache.

The Gary’s Vineyard Grenache offers a deep, contemplative expression of Grenache from the esteemed Blewitt Springs subregion of McLaren Vale. Sourced from Gary Whaite's Springs Hill Vineyard, established in 1974 with Grenache plantings from 2007, this vineyard sits on a ridge above the Onkaparinga Gorge at 200 meters altitude. The unique terroir of ironstone conglomerate mixed with sand and gravel over mottled clay contributes to the wine’s distinctive dark and brooding profile.

The 2023 vintage, hand-picked on March 23rd, includes 7% whole bunches. The winemaking process involves a 9-day ferment, followed by 71 days on skins post-fermentation, and 178 days ageing in a sandstone amphora. Mark's reasoning behind the ageing in Amphora is to preserve as much of the individual characteristics of this unique site as is humanly possible.

An extremely exciting debut for Mark's solo project. If you want to get in on the ground floor, this is going to one of the most interesting projects in South Australia to watch over the coming years.

"This wine. This wine. It didn’t have me at hello but, once I’d sat with it for a bit, I never wanted it to leave. This is an instant entrant into the top tier of Australian wine... It’s superbly long but then, it’s superb throughout."

"It’s a complex thing, with air unlocking layer after layer of detail... It’s finely tooled, decidedly and energetically tannic, but not wantonly so, rather they’re schooling, channelling tannins, resolute in direction, the fruit intensity knit within. It’s very fine indeed."

It’s tannic. It’s meaty. It’s like a pound of chestnuts set into coal, all sweet nuts and woodsmoke, forest berries and leaves. It presents as one complete whole. If you ever wanted an argument for grenache sans oak, this is the last one you’d ever need to hear. It makes the unplugged seem definitive. It does argue its case, it presents it. Tannin-wise it’s completely unafraid of upsetting anyone; it just does what it wants, and what it wants is both ribboned and imposing. It’s superbly long but then, it’s superb throughout." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

97 points - "It’s a complex thing, with air unlocking layer after layer of detail. Freshly crushed bay laurel, dried cranberry, pickled cherries, orange peel, fading rose petals, bitter red aperitivo and mountain herbs, rolling into dry-warmed spices – cassia, clove and pepper – pink peppercorn, goji and sumac. It’s finely tooled, decidedly and energetically tannic, but not wantonly so, rather they’re schooling, channelling tannins, resolute in direction, the fruit intensity knit within. It’s very fine indeed." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - "The 2023 Gary's Vineyard Grenache is light in the glass and opens with an abundance of dried rose petals, crushed seashells, dried herbs (particularly rosemary), raspberry pip, peppercorns and black tea. There's a gentle suggestion of roasted meat dusting the edges of perception. In the mouth, the wine is every bit as fragrant and detailed as the nose suggests it will be, with a sway of very fine, grippy tannins and bloody, saturating red fruit. This is savory despite its floral overtones, with the most magnificent, pure tannins sans the impact of oak. This wine is the embodiment of grape-derived tannins and makes a firm case for Grenache without oak, despite my being personally attracted to old large format oak when it comes to Grenache. This feels as if it will age slowly and gracefully. A truly fine wine. The fruit spent 71 days on skins post fermentation and was matured for 178 days in a sandstone amphora.13.7% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

Occasionally, wines make themselves known through the grapevine, so to speak. Some wines make such an impression that word gets out, and we are left with no choice but to track them down. The Bulman Grenaches are such wines. I heard about them from another wine reviewer here in Australia and set out to find how I might taste them.

Mark Bulman was winemaker at Turkey Flat in the Barossa from 2008 and developed a love for Grenache during that time. The 2016 Turkey Flat won the Jimmy Watson Trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show in 2017, the first time a varietal Grenache had won that trophy. It marked a turning point in Bulman's career, and these wines seem to be the starting point, the open door to the next chapter in his career.

While both the Blewitt Springs and Eden Valley wines here are starkly defined and distinct, they are united in their pure representation of Grenache's capability for tannic structure without the support of oak. Both wines are impressively shaped and textured. Both wines make a clear statement of the beauty inherent in this grape in Australia. Resistance, as they say, is futile." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

    Stunning Grenache

One of the best young Grenache's I've ever had. Finesse, elegance and wonderful texture. The nose just jumps out of the glass.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
