Description

The Serre Pinot Noir vineyard is the jewel in the crown of Bannockburn.

This Burgundian-inspired close-planted site produces an astonishingly small amount of fruit. The average yield for these 13 rows is a meagre 500g per vine, similar to the level of production of the prized Grand Cru vineyards of Burgundy.

Serre is an intense and savoury wine of detail and persistence. Fermented with 20% whole bunches and left to sit on skins for over two weeks, every ounce of nuance from this stunning vineyard is masterfully distilled into the bottle by winemaker, Matt Holmes.

It's a wine of rare power and unique character built for the collector and aficionado.

"Pure red fruit is supported by notes of potpourri, cassia bark, graphite and wet stones. The palate is medium-bodied with piercing fruit and fine tannins, giving notes of dried herbs, spices, orange rind and salt brine. A very complex and complete wine that will live for decades. Made from vines planted in 1984. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

"This is autumnal and sinewy and savoury and spiced, but it’s also sleek, harmonious and settled. It just feels right. It bursts onto the palate with red cherries, rhubarb, tangerine and strawberry, with inlays of dried leaves, pepper and smoked cedarwood, but it’s the soft-firm of the finish, and the way it seems to both dry and expand at once, and the way the juices keep flowing and fanning, that really mark its quality. This will be released in August 2024. It’s a top release, and it will mature beautifully."

The Serre Vineyard

Serré, planted in 1984 and certified organic in 2021, is likely the oldest high-density vineyard planting in Australia. This vineyard was inspired and influenced by Stuart Hooper's love of the great wines of Burgundy, and the tight spacing and low trellising replicates the iconic vineyards of of the Cote d'Or.

Serré, planted in 1984 and extended in 1986, certified organic in 2021, is planted to 1.2m x 1.2m vine spacing, MV6 clone Pinot Noir on its own roots. This is likely the oldest high-density planting of Pinot Noir in Australia. North-south row orientation on a complex soil profile of mixed clay over weathered basalt and limestone is naturally low-yielding; this vineyard is responsible for some of our finest, most powerful, and long-lived Pinot Noir wines.

The fruit was handpicked on the 23rd and 24th of March, completely destemmed, and fermented on skins for 10 days, before pressing to French oak hogshead barrels of which 33% was new. The wine was left undisturbed and went through malolactic fermentation in Spring and was blended and bottled in February.

The 2023 Serré offers vibrant and lifted aromas of berries, cherries, spice, damp earth and other autumnal leafy characters. There is subtle rhubarb and beetroot aromas with a hint of reduction and various brown cooking spices. The flavours follow on from the aromas with lovely fruits of the forest to the fore, with more savoury, earthy and spicy flavours framing. The tannin and oak integration is very well executed and the palate draws long, elegant and with purity. A beautiful expression of this great vineyard.

Bannockburn

For decades, the Bannockburn vineyard has been producing Burgundian-inspired wines which truly reflect a unique patch of Australian terroir.

Originally planted by founder Stuart Hooper and the great Gary Farr in the early 1970s, the wines that come from this special vineyard in Geelong show a rare sense of place. The ancient riverbed soils that sit below the vines impart a distinct saline character for the whites and an awesome power in the reds which makes the wines from this place immediately identifiable.

Matt Holmes is the current winemaker, having taken over from Michael Glover after years as assistant winemaker. His wines have been receiving great critical acclaim during his tenure and this great Australian vineyard's legacy seems very safe in his capable hands.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
