Description

Underhill is the more extroverted sibling in the Yarra Yering Shiraz family - generous, expressive and disarmingly drinkable from day one.

Sourced from a single block planted by Dr. Bailey Carrodus in 1973, this eight-acre patch at the western edge of the estate delivers Shiraz with muscle and charm in equal measure. Where Dry Red No. 2 broods, Underhill beams - showing plush dark fruits, cracked pepper, lavender and a whiff of smoked meats, all wrapped up in a supple, silken frame.

Winemaker Sarah Crowe gives this wine a mix of whole bunch and whole berry ferments, time in both large format oak and seasoned puncheons, and a deft handling of tannin that keeps everything in check without dampening the wine’s natural swagger.

Delicious now, especially with a decant, but will cruise gracefully through the next 10–15 years if you can hold off. A benchmark cool-climate Shiraz, straight from one of Australia’s greatest sites.

"This is a glorious shiraz, bursting with life and what will surely be a 40-year life span, so perfectly framed and balanced are its black cherry and blackberry fruit duo, tannins obediently bending the knee to the fruit."
- James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

"A wine that is balanced and elegant enough to drink young but I would cellar it to bring more complexity into it. Elegant and delicious."

98 points - "From a shiraz vineyard planted in 1973 adjacent to Yarra Yering. A vivid crimson purple colour, a mix of whole-bunch and berry fermentation and maturation in large format French oak. This is a glorious shiraz, bursting with life and what will surely be a 40-year life span, so perfectly framed and balanced are its black cherry and blackberry fruit duo, tannins obediently bending the knee to the fruit." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Brilliant full purple-red hue with aromas of violet/floral nutmeg/spices, the palate bursting with immature fruit that possibly could have enjoyed longer in the barrel. Peppery cool-grown aromas abound. The tannins are fine and emery-like. A wine that is balanced and elegant enough to drink young but I would cellar it to bring more complexity into it. Elegant and delicious." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

95 points - "Perfumed and spice-driven aromas of boysenberries, pepper, rose petals and five spice. The palate is medium-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of cassia bark, wild raspberries and dried strawberries. Very polished and elegant. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

Winemaking

Hand harvested, the bunches pass across a sorting table before processing either as whole bunches or whole berries. 50% of the block is fermented and matured in a 3500L upright oak cask containing 20% whole bunches and topped up for maturation with 100% whole bunch component. The remainder of fermentation in the Yarra Yering half-tonne open-fermenters, gently hand plunged twice daily. Air bag pressed to release the last fermenting juice from the many whole berries that remain. The wine then aged for 12 months; 50% in the 3500L three year old cask and 50% to French oak puncheons (500L); 10% new oak

Yarra Yering

Yarra Yering is one of the most iconic wineries of the modern Yarra Valley.

Founded in 1969 by the visionary vigneron Dr. Bailey Carrodous, Yarra Yering has become a benchmark in quality and one of the most collected wineries in the country.

From this small patch of earth in the North of the Gruyere sub-region, Dr. Carrodous produced these legendary wines for more than three decades. In the process becoming recognised as one of the most influential winemakers in the Yarra's history.

Today, the wines are crafted by the talented Sarah Crowe. She brings the wines to bottle with the same passion and attention to detail that made the great Yarra Yering wines of old so revered.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
