Description

The Amelia is one of the most reliable Cabernet blends in Victoria, and the 2022 vintage stays true to its roots. A significant portion of the fruit comes from the estate’s original plantings from 1963, adding depth and character. This year's blend is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and 10% Petit Verdot.

The 2022 vintage showcases the hallmark elegance of Amelia, with a bit more ripeness and energy. The wine offers a core of blackcurrant and red fruits, tobacco leaf, violet perfume, and a chalky minerality that speaks to the vineyard’s maturity.

This medium-bodied beauty is built for cellaring but is irresistibly drinkable now, with finely etched tannins and a crisp cranberry-like acidity.

“As fragrant and elegant as ever with its aromas of red cherries, cassis, violets and just a little cigar box. It's fragrant in the mouth, too, with these gently chewy and persistent tannins giving the wine its shape and structure. Gorgeous from go to woe.”
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

“It’s really good...has energy and perfume...Cellaring will unlock further nuance and beauty.”
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

A large proportion of the grapes for this wine come from the original
1963 plantings of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc
vines. The remainder is from the more recently planted – 1989 –
petit verdot. Whilst the proportions are different every year,
depending on fruit set and cropping levels, roughly speaking the
break down is about as follows: 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30%
cabernet franc and merlot, and 5% petit verdot. The addition of the
petit verdot grapes in the 1990s gave the wine an added backbone
of tannin and natural acidity. With its long growing season, the petit verdot grapes are the last to be harvested, usually in mid April.
The 2022 Amelia cabernet sauvignon merlot is showing trademark Amelia elegance and finesse with a little bit extra in ripeness. The 2022 Amelia is a typical Wantirna cabernet blend. The fruit is ripe, the tannins long and the palate reflects the high quality of Cabernets from this area of Australia. The blend this year is 24% merlot/cabernet franc, 66% cabernet sauvignon and 10% petit verdot. Certainly the 2022 it is a wine with tremendous immediate appeal and will definitely age very well. - Maryann Egan

97 points - "The majority of this blend comes off the original dry-grown 1963 plantings. As fragrant and elegant as ever with its aromas of red cherries, cassis, violets and just a little cigar box. It's fragrant in the mouth, too, with these gently chewy and persistent tannins giving the wine its shape and structure. Gorgeous from go to woe." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Blackcurrant and red fruits, tobacco and pencils, quite some violet and rosehip perfume, some camphor, roast red capsicum and dried herb. It’s medium-bodied, firm and finely etched, very ‘minerally’, the acidity is crisp and almost cranberried, the tannin offers some chalky and grainy grip, and it’s long and bright to close. This wine has energy and perfume, and while it’s kind of frisky, I reckon it’s really good. Cellaring will unlock further nuance and beauty." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Wantirna Estate

Wantirna Estate is a family affair, founded in 1963 by Reg and Bertina Egan.

This bucolic old-world-inspired vineyard is located not far from Melbourne town centre; now surrounded by suburbia, the proverbial rose amongst the thorns.

Now run primarily by Reg and Bertina's daughter Maryann, the estate produces a small premium range of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and classic medium-bodied Bordeaux blends that are elegant, classic and exceptional options for the cellar.

Reg describes their vineyard as a "never-ending world of change and enchantment".

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
