Description

The Vat 47 Chardonnay is the flagship Chardonnay produced by the famous Tyrrell family in the Hunter Valley.

A blend of the best old vine fruit available to the Tyrrell's winemakers, this is a powerful wine that exemplifies the rich, full-bodied style of Chardonnay that the Hunter Valley has become famous for.

This was Australia's first commercially available Chardonnay, first released in 1971. It's a wine with a reputation for uncompromising quality and has set the pace for premium Hunter Chardonnay from day dot.

A powerful, cellar-worthy wine with the softness and richness to stand toe to toe with any of Australia's top Chardonnays.

97 points
"The palate is beautifully complete with breadth and generosity while being refined and restrained simultaneously. The beauty in this wine is the micro detail giving discreet, sophisticated complexity. It has impressive balance and flow, and I expect it to evolve beautifully with time."
- Toni Paterson MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Maybe a little peachy, but so much potential. It will be all that and more, with a couple of years in the cellar. How is it so!"
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

The five-hectare Short Flat Vineyard is located directly north of the driveway of the Tyrrell’s Pokolbin Estate ‘Ashmans’ at an elevation of about 110 metres. The vineyard is a mosaic of vine ages, with the oldest blocks of Chardonnay dating back to 1968, while the youngest vines were planted in 2001. The Semillon is planted in the middle of the vineyard, where the soils are quite uniform sandy loams, while the Chardonnay is planted more sporadically in sites where the soils best suit the variety. Fruit from the Chardonnay grapes go into our Short Flat ‘Old Vines’ Chardonnay and flagship Vat 47 Chardonnay. The Short Flat Vineyard also has Shiraz and Pinot Noir varieties planted on the site.

97 points - "The grapes for this thoroughly modern, historically significant chardonnay are sourced entirely from Tyrrell's 55-year-old Short Flat estate vineyard, and the cool season resulted in a wine with remarkable tension on the front palate, plus acid-driven intensity and length. The palate is beautifully complete with breadth and generosity while being refined and restrained simultaneously. The beauty in this wine is the micro detail giving discreet, sophisticated complexity. It has impressive balance and flow, and I expect it to evolve beautifully with time." - Toni Paterson (Halliday Wine Companion)

95+ points - "Nutty nougat, white peach, spice and assorted citrus. There’s a little cedar spice oak, but wonderful volume of peach and citrus flavour, fine chalky and flinty texture, fennel seed perfume, a lovely toasty roundness mixed with citrine tang, fine bones with juiciness, and a zesty citrus finish of excellent length. Maybe a little peachy, but so much potential. It will be all that and more, with a couple of years in the cellar. How is it so!" - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
