Description

The 2022 Swinging Bridge Caldwell Lane Chardonnay is all about pushing cool-climate Australian Chardonnay to new heights. Caldwell Lane, sitting 890 metres above sea level and just a short hop from the Swinging Bridge Cellar Door in Orange, NSW, has become a stage for Tom Ward’s ambition to make one of the best Chardonnays around. With Block A’s nutrient-rich soils and Block D’s rocky, well-drained slopes, the vineyard brings together two distinct personalities, perfectly set up to deal with whatever each season delivers.

The 2022 vintage threw its fair share of challenges their way, with heavy rains throughout winter and into summer. It was all hands on deck, thinning the canopy and taming the vine's wild growth. By mid-January, the rain eased up, and the cooler-than-average temperatures helped shape a vintage full of poise and freshness. It’s a true example of how cool-climate growing can bring out something special.

Once in the winery, the fruit was handled with care. Harvested separately from the two blocks, it went straight to the press, then into barrel with a good amount of its natural solids, kicking off a wild ferment. Tom chose a mix of French oak, just enough new wood to add warmth without overpowering the fruit. The wine aged for seven months, with the barrels stirred and tasted until they reached just the right texture. Only the very best barrels made the cut for this single vineyard release.

The final wine is elegant, complex, but not overworked. On the nose, you get bright lemon, soft florals, and a touch of toasty oak, while the palate brings fresh acidity and flavours of green apple, citrus, and a hint of pastry. Tom’s clearly on a mission to put Orange on the map, and this Chardonnay is leading the charge.

MEET THE WINE
Our Single Vineyard series showcases a selection of the best barrels from each vintage and is produced in very small quantities, with the goal of encompassing the true essence of that vineyard. Based at 890m, the Caldwell Lane Vineyard is located 4km from our Cellar Door and has the right to call itself the premium Chardonnay vineyard of Orange, making wines with exceptional flavour intensity, complexity, and longevity. The fruit used for our Caldwell Lane Chardonnay comes from Block A, a flatter block with nutrient-rich soils, and Block D, a North West facing block with a rock shelf and free-draining soil. These two blocks are a perfect combination with each suiting whatever climatic conditions the vintage throws our way.

EXPLORE THE VINTAGE
The 2022 vintage began with high rainfall throughout the winter of 2021 and continued until January. This led to some vigorous canopy growth in the early months of spring and summer, requiring extensive leaf plucking, trimming, and crop thinning to ensure the crop was properly set up heading toward harvest. The rainfall stopped in mid-January and held off until mid-April, which allowed us to harvest the fruit with optimal ripeness. Below average temperatures in every month of the growing season lead to some beautiful cool climate wines.

APPRECIATE THE WINEMAKING
The fruit is picked from our Caldwell Lane Vineyard (Blocks D and A). The fruit is then taken straight to the press and pressed to tank, where some limited settling is undertaken for 24 hours. The juice is then racked to barrel, taking a fair amount of solids, and left for wild ferment. Fermentation occurs as quickly as possible, with the wines being sulfured upon completion of fermentation. The barrels consist of 20% new hogsheads and puncheons with the rest varying up to 5 years of age. They are a mixture of French Tonneliers that are well suited to Chardonnay in Orange. The wine is held in barrel for 7 months, stirred every couple of weeks initially and then less frequently until the right texture is achieved, depending on each individual barrel. The barrels are then tasted separately and the best are selected to go into our single vineyard wines, ready for bottling in November.

Swinging Bridge Wines

Swinging Bridge is one of Orange’s premier producers.

This producer has always served up extremely well-priced, classically styled wines, but recent years has seen the quality and variety go to another level.

Owner/winemaker Tom Ward has a vision for Swinging Bridge to be renowned for its premium Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and for innovation, and they're making great strides.

Their Chardonnay is already as good as any in the region; the Pinot Noir, while early days, is winning trophies and shows great promise, the innovative '# Series' is full of all sorts of deliciously quirky experiments.

An excellent producer and a leader for the future for Orange and NSW wine.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
