Description

This is Tempranillo reimagined with an Alpine Valleys twist—svelte, aromatic, and structured to perfection. Grown in the small but mighty vineyards of Porepunkah by Eleana Anderson and Bryan Nicholson, this wine is proof that Mayford is setting the benchmark for Australian Tempranillo.

Handpicked in small parcels over late March and early April, each batch of Tempranillo was given the care it deserved—chilled, cold-soaked, and naturally fermented in open pots with plenty of hand plunging. A mix of whole bunches and extended maceration gave extra complexity to some of the parcels. Basket pressing followed, before the wine spent eleven months in French barriques (25% new), with malo lees retained to add texture and nuance.

The result is a mid-weight wine that balances power with poise. Aromas of black cherry, violets, musk, and a hint of charred meat draw you in, while the palate delivers layers of fleshy dark fruit, sarsaparilla, spice, and a touch of bitter chocolate. The tannins are fine and powdery, coating the tongue and giving the wine a beautifully velvety structure.

This Tempranillo is a true standout—not just for its sheer drinkability, but for the way it captures the character of the Alpine Valleys. Rich, balanced, and bursting with flavour, it’s a brilliant example of just how good Australian Tempranillo can be.

"Eleana Anderson is the tempranillo whisperer, a natural when it comes to the Spanish grape. Brings a real sense of elegance and class to the '22, not the easiest of vintages. Gentle black cherry, plum, bramble, earth and dried herb aromas. A refined palate awaits, one sensitively managed by well-judged oak and fine tannins. A vinous picture of sophistication."

"The framework here is substantial. So too the flesh. This is a wine of meat, bones, stuffing and gravy. It tastes of scorched black cherries, chicory, woodsmoke and cedar, though sweet spice and kirsch notes get guernseys too. The flavour here may be bold, and polished, but folded within it are arms of muscular tannin, and these guide the wine to somewhere grander. It’s a wave, this wine. It lifts and it carries. It’s a release of note."

Another cool and European style of season produced elegant and aromatic Tempranillo with fine, velvety tannins. The 2022 harvest was even later than the late 2021 season and the crop enjoyed the benefits of long, slow ripening without extreme temperatures.

Tempranillo was hand-picked in ten small parcels over late March and early April 2023. Each separate batch was chilled and cold soaked prior to natural ferment in open pots with extensive hand plunging. Some batches had a percentage of stalk and whole bunch inclusion and others, extended post ferment-maceration.

Each wine was then basket pressed before being put to barrel for maturation in French barriques (25% new) for eleven months, retaining malo lees for texture and complexity before blending and filtration.

Svelte and perfumed, with aromas of black cherry, violets, musk, sarsaparilla and charred meats. The palate shows poise and balance. It is mid-weight with fleshy dark fruits, black cherry and sarsaparilla, spice, bitter chocolate, and char, licked together with fine, powdery, tongue-coating tannins.

Beautifully elegant and balanced.

Fantastic producer & lovely Australian Tempranillo. I like these with a bit of age on them, but they drink well straight away as well

    Love this Temp!

This has all the good stuff - dark fruit, some cola and a hint of cigar box, getting darker and more savoury with air. Love it!

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
