Description

The 2022 John Duval Plexus GSM is a seamless expression of Barossa’s classic blend, crafted with precision and over four decades of winemaking expertise. A true showcase of Shiraz, Grenache, and Mourvèdre from some of the region’s finest old-vine vineyards, this wine is all about balance, structure, and depth.

Shiraz brings the richness—dark fruits and mid-palate weight that Barossa is famed for. Grenache adds a lively burst of red fruits and spice, giving the wine a lifted vibrancy, while Mourvèdre delivers its trademark savoury tannins, firming up the structure and ensuring a long, satisfying finish.

It’s rich yet approachable, bold yet refined, and consistently over-delivers in value. Whether you’re a GSM fan or new to the blend, the Plexus is a wine that brings together John Duval’s extensive experience and the Barossa's most treasured vineyards in perfect harmony.

94 points - "This year's Plexus release sees a blend of shiraz (43%), grenache (41%) and mourvèdre (16%) from across a number of the parishes of the Barossa. Lovely dark plum and boysenberry fruits with hints of cherry clafoutis, dark chocolate, roasting meats, clover blossom, softly spoken cedar and vanillin and earth. Supple and pure with fine gravelly tannins and a minerally cadence showing plum, spice and mocha tones at the tail." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "Blackberry, dark cherry, cocoa, baking spices, freshly lathed wood, something a little exotic in the mix too with its discreet incense-like perfume. It’s medium to full-bodied, plush and fleshy, with grainy dark chocolate tannin, and a rich plummy finish of excellent length and powdery grip. Balanced with flavour, is how I’d sum it up. Just over the line for 94 points, I reckon." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

94 points - "The 2022 Plexus comprises 43% Shiraz, 41% Grenache and 16% Mourvèdre (a.k.a. Mataro). This is the most Grenache that has ever been included in the Plexus, and 2022 was a beautiful season for that variety. "It's always an SGM," says winemaker John Duval. "The Shiraz helps it age in the cellar." On the nose, you get black fruits and exotic spice, layers of forest berries and brine. On the palate, the wine is sweetly fruited and brilliantly fresh. It has an earthy textural bedrock presumably from the Mataro, which grounds the fruit. The tannins are a highlight here. There are some very old vineyards that add to this cuvee, four at over 100 years old, and perhaps these assist with the tannic complexity. A portion of the fruit is from the Hoffmann Vineyard: Shiraz Dallwitz block, Church Block Mataro and 65-year-old dry-grown Grenache. This is a sensational release. Really good. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

93 points - "This is mellow and chocolatey with dark cherries, ripe plums, cocoa beans and cooking spices. Medium- to full-bodied with grainy tannins that are velvety and soft. It is weighty and mouth-filling with delicious fruit and a succulent finish. Shiraz, grenache and mourvedre. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - James Suckling

BACKGROUND
Our affinity for working with old vine Barossa Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvédre began with John’s time at Penfolds, and continues with this wine - the first to be released by John Duval Wines’ from our inaugural vintage in 2003. The aim of Plexus is to express a wide spectrum of fruit flavours, whilst ensuring seamless integration of the contrasting characters of the three varietals. Shiraz provides rich dark fruits and mid palate weight, whilst Grenache delivers a bright flavour spectrum of red fruits and spiced notes. Old vine Mourvèdre is integral to the blend, ensuring a good firm backbone of savoury tannin and a long finish.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
