Description

Jeffrey Grosset's Gaia vineyard is one of the most extreme in the Clare Valley. Perched at 560 metres, the Gaia Vineyard is the highest and coolest in the region, a rugged and rocky landscape that yields some of the most refined and structured Cabernet in Australia.

The 2022 vintage is nothing short of exceptional, with a cool season bringing out the best in this already unique site. Composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, the wine is matured exclusively in French oak barriques, 45% of which are new, for 18 months. The result is a brooding, complex wine with aromas of blackcurrant, dark liqueur cherry, and bramble, lifted by hints of graphite, black tea, and dark chocolate. The palate is powerful yet impeccably balanced, with dense dark fruit flavours, vibrant acidity, and fine, mineral-laden tannins that promise incredible longevity.

97 points
"The depth and definition of crunchy blackcurrant and cassis fruit is monumental, and it is blessed with all the mineral-fine tannin, vibrant acidity and profound persistence to endure exceedingly long indeed. the essence of Cabernet, and of Gaia!"
- Tyson Stelzer (WBM)

This is a Cabernet for the ages, with critics universally praising its depth, elegance, and capacity for long-term cellaring. Mike Bennie calls it “hauntingly beautiful,” while Tyson Stelzer called it “the essence of Cabernet, and of Gaia”, with beautiful concentration and structure.

97 points
"It's powerful, concentrated and backed by a welter of firm tannins, but doesn't sacrifice its elegance. This is a tightly packed, dense and focused cabernet that deserves a decent term in the cellar. It's just a baby today."
- Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Whether you’re a seasoned collector or simply a lover of fine Cabernet, the 2022 Grosset Gaia is a must-have. It’s a wine that will reward patience in the cellar, but is also poised and ready to impress at any special occasion. Secure a bottle or two while you can—this is a wine that will only get better with time.

96 points
"The perfume is rich in dark berries, black olive, mint and fennel with some woody spice overlay – lovely stuff here, too. The quality of tannin needs additional mention. This is such an impressive, elegant wine."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points
"These are wines of effortless movement and shape, and the tannins in this vintage are almost certainly the highlight; they are pliable, ductile and ultra fine. A superb wine."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

Jeffrey Grosset established the isolated and windswept Grosset Gaia Vineyard in 1986. Planted at an elevation of 560 metres, it is the highest vineyard in the Clare Valley.

Consisting of two hectares of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, hard red rock predominates, and the rocky outcrops that break through the earth prevent inter-row cropping and weed control through tillage.

Close-planted at 3000 vines per hectare, the yield is about two kilograms per vine; less than two bottles of wine. That vines manage to grow here at all is something of a marvel, let alone the quality and consistency of the fruit they produce.

Grosset named the vineyard ‘Gaia’ after scientist James Lovelock’s theory of symbiosis, which posits that the earth is a single living organism of immense complexity; one that depends on the full diversity of its species to remain in balance, sustain its ecological health, and restore itself in the face of the changing environmental conditions precipitated by human activity.

Grosset has absorbed Lovelock’s ecological theories and learnt much from this 1986 planting, this wealth of knowledge a major influence in the more recent plantings.

97 points - "This exposed and extreme site in the upper reaches of Clare is characterised by Cabernet of concentration, varietal precision, structural confidence and grand longevity, and the cool 2022 season has only served to amplify all four dimensions. The depth and definition of crunchy blackcurrant and cassis fruit is monumental, and it is blessed with all the mineral-fine tannin, vibrant acidity and profound persistence to endure exceedingly long indeed. the essence of Cabernet, and of Gaia!" - Tyson Stelzer (WBM)

97 points - "Very deep and very bright young red-purple colour, that stains the glass. There are fresh, youthful, almost raw aromas of raspberry, cassis, blackberry and briar, beautifully ripened, the palate very concentrated, dense and full-bodied but not over- the-top. It's powerful, concentrated and backed by a welter of firm tannins, but doesn't sacrifice its elegance. This is a tightly packed, dense and focused cabernet that deserves a decent term in the cellar. It's just a baby today. 11 FEB 2024" - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points - "The blend in 2022 is 85/15% cabernet sauvignon/cabernet franc. A hauntingly beautiful rendition of Gaia that's svelte, even, succulent and impressive in persistence. There's immense concentration in its medium weight, compact frame, and tannins shimmer with emery board grip and drag stretching the wine out and tucking in the darker fruit, spice and herbal details. The perfume is rich in dark berries, black olive, mint and fennel with some woody spice overlay – lovely stuff here, too. The quality of tannin needs additional mention. This is such an impressive, elegant wine." - Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Today, I am tasting the 2021 and 2022 Gaia side by side, and what a pair of wines they make. The two vintages were not dissimilar, in that they were mild and long, and both are excellent; so, it is a privilege to see the results of those seasons here together. Aromatically, the 2022 Gaia is not as giving as the 2021, yet it is in possession of its own register of attributes: graphite and black tea, blackberry, dried mint, gravel and iodine, oyster shell, bitter chocolate and cocoa and tapenade. In the mouth, the wine has that seamless flow of the 2021, albeit with a firmer tannin profile. These are wines of effortless movement and shape, and the tannins in this vintage are almost certainly the highlight; they are pliable, ductile and ultra fine. A superb wine." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

97 points - "Jeffrey Grosset may be best known as Australia's pre-eminent maker of fine rieslings, but he is certainly no one trick pony. The Grosset range of biodynamic wine excellence now comprises 11 wines, nine from the Clare Valley and two from the Piccadilly Valley (Adelaide Hills). If you are looking for a stylish red full of complexity and palate interest then this will fit the bill. A blend of 85% Clare Valley cabernet sauvignon and 15% cabernet franc, it is impeccably balanced - a thing of beauty. Taut still, but with classic briary/wild hedgerow characters, dark currant flavours and well-integrated French oak, this can be enjoyed right now as you admire its length and polish, or be cellared for a decade or two. Dinner party coming up? Buy a couple of bottles. Happy to give this one a cracking 97/100." - Winsor Dobbin (Gourmet on the Road - Wine of the Week)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
