Description

For your money, Gembrook Hill is probably one of the finest Pinot Noir producers in the land, and this is another exciting addition to the range.

After the introduction in vintage 2017 of the 'IJM' Pinot in honour of late Gembrook Hill founder Ian Marks, current winemaker Andrew Marks has added the 'JKM' Pinot in honour of his still-working mother, June Marks.

Both wines come from a small block of excellent Pinot fruit on the Gembrook Hill vineyard, and while IJM is all about the vineyard, this wine gives Andrew a chance to experiment a bit in the winery, with one third new oak and one third whole bunch employed to add extra depth and complexity.

A must-try for overs of this cult estate.

"A bright crimson. Handles the whole bunches with ease, with its aromas of morello cherries, wild strawberries, rosebush and a little sandalwood. On the palate, this has a core of crunchy fruit, yet it's still silky textured with those very fine, detailed tannins that this site consistently produces. A lovely wine from beginning to end."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

The intention for this wine is to explore both new viticultural and wine making techniques, while still capturing the essence of the vineyard. The viticultural technique is shoot selection - a refinement of shoot thinning which we have always used in the vineyard. This serves to open up the canopy, reducing disease risk and increasing sunlight into the canopy, while producing more intense fruit. The winemaking technique is the use of some whole bunch fermentation from our newest plantings of Pinot which was then matured in a new French hogshead. This made up a third of the wine while the rest comes from destemmed young vine fruit. There were two barrels of this, both matured in old french oak.

The result is a bold, complex, aromatic Pinot with plenty of flavour.

95 Points - "Top of the tree stuff from the wonderful Gembrook Hill. Has that sweet cherry thing going on, some tart cranberry in the mix, a bit of sugared almond, some faint white chocolate elements and light, white peppery notes. Palate and bouquet in synch. Quite lush but lighter weight in the palate, soft, velvety, ultra long and lingering with sweet spices, white pepper and ripe cherry. It’s such a pleasing, luxurious feel here. A sense of ‘modern Australian pinot noir’ came to mind, very primary fruited and open weave, with acidity tempering things rather than tannin. Gorgeous, is the other word." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

97 points - "Made in honour of Andrew Marks' mum, June; 30% whole bunches and 30% new oak. A bright crimson. Handles the whole bunches with ease, with its aromas of morello cherries, wild strawberries, rosebush and a little sandalwood. On the palate, this has a core of crunchy fruit, yet it's still silky textured with those very fine, detailed tannins that this site consistently produces. A lovely wine from beginning to end." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

Gembrook Hill

Based in the cool upper reaches of the Yarra Valley, Gembrook Hill is one of the country's most loved producers of Pinot Noir.

Founded in 1983 by Ian and June Marks, Gembrook is one of the most picturesque vineyards in the region. As well as their stunning Pinot Noirs, they produce excellent examples of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and an elegant Blanc de Blanc in certain vintages.

Ian Marks sadly passed away in 2017. His son Andrew now tends the family vineyard and makes the wines, continuing the family legacy for producing outstanding examples of Upper Yarra wine.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
