Description

The Smith family have been growing Mourvedre on their property for the past 20 years, usually blending it away into some of their other reds. These Mourvedre vines are the oldest in the region for the variety, and so they decided it was finally time to bring it into the spotlight with a single variety bottling.

The 2022 Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Mourvèdre is a brooding, complex red that’s all about depth and character. With the oldest Mourvèdre vines in the region, the Smith family have really come into their own with this second-ever single-varietal release from the Isolation Ridge Vineyard.

On the nose, expect a whirlwind of exotic spice, floral notes, and earthy undertones. Think spiced cherries, dried rose petals, and a touch of prosciutto, all underpinned by the vineyard’s signature ferrous minerality. The palate is just as enticing—juicy and layered, with dark blueberry, bitter cocoa, and a savoury edge that makes it both intriguing and incredibly drinkable. The tannins are fine and dusty, allowing the fruit, spice, and earthy elements to take centre stage.

Aged for 14 months in puncheons, this Mourvèdre is elegant yet powerful, with a freshness that speaks to the cool, slow-ripening vintage of 2022. It’s a wine for those who love their reds dark, savoury, and full of personality. Enjoy now or cellar until 2036 to see those earthy, mineral notes evolve even further.

Filled to the brim with layers and layers of flavour - blueberry, ferrous minerality, bitter cocoa - all coming together with an aura of European flair.

"Liquorice/aniseed, violet, cherry and raspberry, dried herbs, camphor, peanut shells, orange peel, smoked tea leaf – all the things! It’s medium-bodied, meaty and savoury, strewn with dried herb/flower perfume, grainy sooty tannin chew, shitake mushroom and other umami stuff, a pomegranate tang to lively acidity, with a dusty dry and ferrous finish of excellent length. Such character. Terrific."

"I have a soft spot for this savoury, rustic yet utterly charming wine. While it has a core of sweet red cherries and plums doused in warm spices with some licorice, it’s the meatiness, the twigs, earthiness and woodsy/oak flavour that come to the fore. The tannins are gravelly, the mid-weighted palate attuned to the acidity flowing through. It’s satisfying and the consensus is, please pass another glass alongside the charcuterie platter."

TASTING NOTE
The nose is beguiling for its exotic spices, floral notes, fresh red fruit, earth, charcuterie
and iodine. The combination of Mourvèdre and Isolation Ridge gives a head-spinning
sensorial mix that smells refreshing. Dried rose petals, musk, incense, cinnamon, spiced
cherries, cranberry, terracotta and fine prosciutto are all there. The entry is precise, but
then all these threads unfurl on a palate that is pretty, juicy and succulent. The tannins -
somewhere between Syrah and Nebbiolo in character - are dusty and discreet, allowing
the spice, herbs, flowers and ferrous mineral echoes to unspool through a rippling,
refreshing finish. A sleek, lacy rendition of this grape that really shows its affinity with the
site.
We’ve found this lightness of touch in the last few years with Mourvèdre. We’re getting
really good stuff out of the skins – a redcurrant brightness that plays so nicely off the
earth and charcuterie. That intrigue - those extra twists and turns on the palate - is what
we’re looking for. – Brian Kent
2022 VINTAGE
A profound vintage for Frankland River. A very wet and cold winter was followed by a cool
and wet spring, which wet the soil profile all the way through, providing ideal conditions
for good growth and fruit set on the vines. Drier conditions from December onwards, with
nice warm days without being hot, allowed the vines to carry a good crop through to
harvest. Fruit for this wine was harvested from late March to early April. The long
hangtime rewarded grapes with lovely maturity and flavour.
VINEYARD
Mourvèdre was first planted on the Isolation Ridge Vineyard in 2005, making these vines
the oldest in the region for this variety. The maturity of the vines - together with our
deepening understanding of the grape and the wine it wanted to be – led to its ascendancy
to the Isolation Ridge range, and it is just getting better. We are delighted with this wine.
VINIFICATION
The grapes were destemmed and fermented in small, open pots. The wine was pressed
reasonably quickly after primary ferment to keep the tannins in check, then matured in
puncheons for 14 months. We love this wine’s savoury aspect and the way it highlights
the elegance with power that comes from Isolation Ridge. With vine age, the signature
ferrous notes are clearly written. This wine has an exciting future.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
