Description

Serious white wine lovers, take note - this is not your standard Savvy B blend. Crawford River’s Beta release is built different, with a touch more age, a whole lot more complexity, and the kind of detail that rewards a second (or third) glass.

From a limestone-laced vineyard planted in 1994, this blend is all about precision. Sauvignon Blanc brings the pretty aromatics—white florals, a flicker of green melon - while Semillon adds depth, citrus pith, and a quiet, confident power. Fermented wild and aged for 10 months in older oak, it’s silky yet structured, bright yet lingering, and has enough grip to keep things interesting.

Think cashew, flint, chalk, and green walnut wrapped in a cool, linear frame of natural acidity. This is crisp, textured and built to evolve - perfect for those who like their whites with a bit of edge.

"Lovely is a word that delivers an arguably lightweight description of a wine, but this really is lovely. It’s soft and supple, there’s fresh cut stone fruit, ripe lemon, grapefruit, gentle oatmeal and vanilla notes, light, toasty, sweet spices, a lick of chestnut cream and a touch of briny minerality. Fantastic. Just so. Delivers the goods in complexity of flavour and texture while managing very high drinkability. Proper stuff."

“I have a scribble in my Vintage book that uses the word ‘pure’ for the Semillon and ‘pretty’ for the Sauvignon Blanc fruit in 2022. I think they are evident in the wine. Production has pulled these two elements together and has created a wine with elegance, finesse, and texture on top of the two preeminent attributes.”

Season

The 2021/22 growing season got off to a rocky start, with the Victoria weather throwing a combination of heavy rain, wildly oscillating temperatures, and destructive winds. From the end of November, the clouds cleared, and the season flipped on its head to become relatively dry. December proved a relatively warm month and resulted in terrific fruit set across varieties.

We had short, sharp bursts of rain at the end of January and February, which were both warm and otherwise dry. The end of the season was mild, meaning ripening progressed very evenly. Colour, acid, and tannin all developed beautifully, as did flavours, leading to fabulous fruit being harvested.

Winery

Both varieties are 100% whole-bunch pressed, settled in tank overnight, chilled, and racked the next day to barrel. No additions are made to this juice, which is left to naturally ferment in its own time. It spends around 10 months in mostly older oak, after which it is blended to tank where it spent another seven months settling.

Vineyard

This section of the vineyard was planted in 1994. We have always thought this block was unique and capable of great things, but our excitement was elevated when drilling the posts, as fossilized sea shells in chalky limestone surfaced from only 500mm below ironstone-rich topsoil.

Winemaker’s Notes

A poised amalgam of cashew nut, green melon, green walnut, flint, and chalk are all present. White florals play around the edges of the front palate. The time on lees lends a silky palate with texture and gentle structure. Bright and fresh, the acidity is an essential part of the length, persistence, and longevity of this wine.

Crawford River

Crawford River is very much a family operation. The talented Thomson clan have been producing wine from their beautiful home vineyard since 1985.

The Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc thrive on the estate, but it's Riesling that they are most famous for.

They produce a range of styles of varying ages that are outstanding. Many consider them as one of the country's premier producers of the noble variety.

These are wines of purity and elegance. Small-batch, family-owned, traditional winemaking and good, honest farming is at the core of everything Crawford River does.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
