Description

The Underhill Shiraz comes from 8 acres of vines on the far Western side of the famous Yarra Yering vineyard in Gruyere.

Planted by Dr. Carrodus in 1973, the wines from this site tend to show better in their youth than the brooding powerhouse that is the Dry Red No. 2.

Underhill is approachable from day one, however, a few years in the cellar wouldn't hurt it either. This is yet another fantastic release from Sarah Crowe, bold and full-flavoured.

If you love Shiraz/Syrah from the Yarra Valley, this wine would make an excellent addition to your cellar.

"A gorgeous medium-weighted, intensely flavoured and long Yarra Valley shiraz with enough tannin to suggest patience will be rewarded. Great stuff."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

"A full-bodied, powerful, soft and fleshy textured wine with ample powdery tannins and a lasting array of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and pepper characters. Amazing length. A ripping shiraz."
- Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

98 points - "Sourced from a single block planted in 1973. Fermented with a combination of whole bunches and whole berries. Half the wine was fermented and matured in a 3500L French foudre (purchased in 2019), the other half in French puncheons (10% new). A medium–deep and very bright crimson. Lifted and immediately appealing with its aromas of black raspberries and violets alongside a cornucopia of spices including cracked black pepper, anise and fennel seeds. A gorgeous medium-weighted, intensely flavoured and long Yarra Valley shiraz with enough tannin to suggest patience will be rewarded. Great stuff." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - "Deep, strong and bright purple-red colour; high-toned white pepper aromas, a whiff of reduction; char, spice and meaty smallgoods aromas. A full-bodied, powerful, soft and fleshy textured wine with ample powdery tannins and a lasting array of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and pepper characters. Amazing length. A ripping shiraz. (Released in 2023, the Underhill vineyard's 50th year)" - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

95 points - "Wonderful wine. Just above medium weight, some creamy oak but woven within, juicy fruit, understated twig-like notes, almost into undergrowth. Raspberry and sweet plum flavours, and peppercorns, complex and approachable, measured and powerful at once. Yarra Yering’s Underhill Shiraz is in excellent form." - Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

Hand harvested, the bunches pass across a sorting table before processing either as whole bunches or whole berries. 50% of the block is fermented and matured in a 3500L upright oak cask containing 20% whole bunches and topped up for maturation with 100% whole bunch component. The remainder of the fermentation is in the Yarra Yering half-tonne open-fermenters, gently hand-plunged twice daily. Air bag pressed to release the last fermenting juice from the many whole berries that remain. The wine then aged for 12 months; 50% in the 3500L two-year-old cask and 50% to French oak puncheons (500L); 10% new oak.

Yarra Yering

Yarra Yering is one of the most iconic wineries of the modern Yarra Valley.

Founded in 1969 by the visionary vigneron Dr. Bailey Carrodous, Yarra Yering has become a benchmark in quality and one of the most collected wineries in the country.

From this small patch of earth in the North of the Gruyere sub-region, Dr. Carrodous produced these legendary wines for more than three decades. In the process becoming recognised as one of the most influential winemakers in the Yarra's history.

Today, the wines are crafted by the talented Sarah Crowe. She brings the wines to bottle with the same passion and attention to detail that made the great Yarra Yering wines of old so revered.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
