Description

While the Semillon on the Belford vineyard was planted back in 1933, it wasn't until 1991 that Chardonnay vines were put down on this iconic Hunter Valley vineyard.

Belford the northernmost Chardonnay vineyard that the Tyrrell's family farms, and produces uniquely rich and powerful Chardonnay wines.

Handpicked and meticulously crafted, the fruit is basket pressed, chilled to settle then undergoes fermentation in stainless-steel tanks and matures in French oak barriques for eight months.

It's a beautifully controlled version of modern Hunter Chardonnay.

97 points
"Belford vineyard has a sense of place. It is unlike peers thanks to its multilayered, tangy fruit with a hint of blood orange (both skin and flesh). Outstanding value."
- James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - "The vineyard is the northernmost of the estate vineyards, planted on light, almost talc-like sandy soils. After basket pressing, fermentation was initiated in tank and completed in French oak (15% new, the used portion largely barriques). Whether semillon or chardonnay, Belford vineyard has a sense of place. It is unlike peers thanks to its multilayered, tangy fruit with a hint of blood orange (both skin and flesh). Outstanding value." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Bright, light yellow with a green tinge; pastry, cashew nut, crème patissière aromas with lemon and honey details: a really seductive bouquet. The wine is tightly focused and intense, precise and moderately long on the palate, with a low-alcohol finesse and delicious harmony. A cracking chardonnay." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

94+ points - "White peach, almond, gentle spice, lemon barley. Light to medium-bodied, fine powdery texture, lovely flow and line, and a little tangy lime and vanilla cream, a firm cut of bright acidity, with a long composed finish. A smattering of green herb in the mix here too. Beautiful wine of charm and style." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

The Tyrrell family leases the Belford vineyard. It is our northern-most Chardonnay vineyard and was planted in 1991. Being the vineyard that is furthest away from the Brokenback range, it has the most broken-down soil, with a consistency similar to that of talcum powder. The fruit was handpicked on 3 February and then immediately basket pressed. The juice was then cold settled for two days before fermentation began in stainless-steel tanks. The fermenting juice was then transferred to French oak barriques for eight months’ maturation.

Not unlike the Semillon from Belford, the Chardonnay always shows a dense structure and richer fruit profile. The French oak sits well within the structure of the wine and balances out the primary fruit characters and secondary textural elements in the wine. A great example of modern Hunter Valley Chardonnay with great vibrancy and length.

Tyrrell's

Established in 1858, Tyrrell's, an esteemed family-owned winery, holds a prominent place in Australia's viticultural history. Renowned for exemplary Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay releases, the Tyrrell family safeguards the Hunter Valley's finest and oldest vineyards, upholding a legacy of quality winemaking. Chris Tyrrell, continuing the family tradition, ensures Tyrrell's remains a crucial pillar in the realm of Australian wine.

Embedded in the Hunter Valley's fabric, Tyrrell's, guided by founder Edward Tyrrell, pioneered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, influencing the iconic Semillon style. Notably, their Vat 1 Semillon, Australia's most-awarded white wine, holds almost 5,500 medals and 330 trophies.

While honoring their heritage, the Tyrrells embrace innovation, staying at the forefront of the dynamic Hunter Valley. Fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell finds humility in working with his forefathers' vineyards. The family's commitment extends to future generations, evidenced by their participation in Australia's First Families of Wine. Guided by Edward Tyrrell's motto, "Nothing is great unless it is good," the Tyrrell legacy persists, passing the business to successive generations, balancing reverence for the past with a forward-looking perspective.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
