Description

The Mount Mary Triolet is a wine inspired by the great white blends of Bordeaux.

The vineyard is planted to 75% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Semillon and 5% Muscadelle. Each variety is picked at perfect ripeness, then vinified in essentially the same way as their Chardonnay with 100% barrel ferment (in mostly older oak), some solids from firm pressing and lees stirring employed over the 11 months it rests in barrel before bottling.

It is a tightly wound, beautifully balanced example of this cult favourite wine, showing the restraint and finesse that is typical of the best Triolets. The ideal season in the Yarra allowing plenty of flavour development and pristine acidity through the wine.

This is a top example of why this is considered one of the country's finest examples of the Bordeaux Blanc style.

98 points - "A stunning Triolet with its aromas of greengages, white nectarine, Meyer lemon, lemongrass and jasmine. There's a hint of sandalwood coming from the oak. Seductive, powerful and restrained. Slippery, chalky textured, tightly wound and very long, this is going to be a great and long-lived wine. In a league of its own." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

98 points - "Triolet is a gently mid-weighted wine of refined detail and exquisite restraint, so much so that those who seek obvious fruit fail to understand it. It is a wine that ages with prowess, too. Indeed, the finest aged white I have experienced across the New World was older Triolet. Lanolin, lemon drop, quince and nettle push long across a meld of effusive energy and extract. The oak, subtly compressing the fray into a bone of tension. Excellent finish. Drinking this is an emotional experience, pushing the exhilaration meter up a notch. Best after 2027." - Ned Goodwin MW (JamesSuckling.com)

96 points - "A blend of 65% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Semillon and 10% Muscadelle, this is a reflection of the original vineyard planting. This had a high solid component in the ferment and was stirred as required rather than to a schedule. On the nose of this 2021 Triolet, there is an amalgam of curry leaf, white flowers, crushed chalk, guava, sugar snap pea (and I mean this in the way that the flowers waft on the breeze, rather than the snap of the pod itself), a hint of cilantro and even a hint of jalapeño. This is very faint. In the mouth, the wine has great phenolic structure—it is firm and almost austere structurally. This is good; it gives the fruit some chew and shape as it flows across the palate. It ages gracefully, and the impact of this cool season is evident to see in the wine today. There was no new oak in the elevage; the Sauvignon Blanc matured in seasoned pucheons, the Semillon and Muscadelle in barriques for eleven months, and then it was blended prior to bottling. 12.8% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." -

96+ points - " One of the nicest BDX blends I’ve had, was the 1985 Haut Brion Blanc. I say this, because many don’t recognise how good these blends can be, not least with bottle age. This is a complete wine. There’s guava, lime, lemongrass, a subtle smoky matchstick edge, lemon thyme, passionfruit pith, white flowers, a little cedar and aniseed. Tight, flinty, a burst of flavour, yet so controlled, pink grapefruit, lime rind, thistle, umami Parmesan rind, so much energy and presence, and the finish is so long and cool. There’s not many SSB blends as good as this, from anywhere. Insanely good." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

The Triolet blend, first produced at Mount Mary in 1987, was inspired by the white wines of Graves, Bordeaux. The vineyard is planted to 75% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Semillon and 5% Muscadelle. Each variety is picked at optimum ripeness, and is fermented separately. The characteristics of optimum ripeness are different for each variety. We pick the Sauvignon blanc after the strong herbaceous flavours have disappeared, the Semillon when the acid is not too harsh, and the Muscadelle when the flavour intensity peaks. In the winery we use mostly older barrels for this wine, with the entire production being barrel fermented. Relatively hard pressing is employed to give the wine texture and lees stirring is carried out to add complexity and body. The Triolet is typically barrel aged for 11 months by which time the overt fruity flavours have diminished, and complex aromas are beginning to develop.

Mount Mary

One of the great Australian domains is in the form of its life with young Sam Middleton as head winemaker.

The list of accolades for the great Mount Mary is long and rich. They are one of the country's most celebrated and collectable family-owned estates. From the impossible balance of the iconic Quintet and Triolet blends to the scintillating Chardonnays and the rare and almost mythical Pinot Noir, there is not a hair out of place in the Mount Mary lineup.

With Sam Middleton in charge of the winemaking process, Mount Mary is entering its second golden age as one of the jewels of the Yarra Valley.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
