Description

The 2021 Koomilya GT Block Shiraz is an expressive, energetic wine from 33-year-old vines once grafted onto Gewürztraminer, hence its "GT" moniker. Grown on ancient slaty siltstone laminated with ironstone, this is beautiful Shiraz, with complex aromas of red cherry, raspberry, crushed spices, and woodsmoke.

Hand-harvested and vinified with native yeast and 20% whole bunches, it undergoes extended fermentation on skins before settling in large French oak.

Ned Goodwin MW awarded it 97 points, praising its saline and licorice-tinged tannins and its ageing potential, calling it "a true exploration of a great terroir." Meanwhile, Marcus Ellis of Wine Companion lauded its fragrant lift, spiced panforte and orange peel notes, describing it as the "most lifted and fragrant of the Koomilya Shiraz triad" and scoring it a commendable 96 points.

For those in search of a distinctive Shiraz with savoury complexity, the GT Block Shiraz offers a window into Stephen Pannell’s vision of modern McLaren Vale winemaking.

“This wine is typical of Koomilya in terms of its iodine, anise and blueberry notes, but without the dramatic mid-palate sweetness of other wines from this site... A true exploration of a great terroir.”
– Ned Goodwin MW (JamesSuckling.com, March 2024)

96 points
"This is a distinctive wine, and yes, we often say it, but it seems the Shiraz carries the memory of the Gewurtz of its roots... a distinctly stony and ‘mineral’ feel, with a supple dark red fruit finish of superb length, offering a flourish of perfume and spice to close. Superb wine."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
96 points
“This is the least upholstered of the block trio, which is neither here nor there, but there is a certain drive and relative lightness that distinguishes it as something quite individual, and also quite special.”
– Marcus Ellis (Wine Companion, August 2024)

A single block Shiraz from 33-year-old vines grafted on Gewurztraminer planted in 1974 by Jill and Don Cant, the previous owners. Grown on ancient, dark grey slaty siltstone laminated with ironstone facing South at an altitude of 116m. The last block to be restored to health, GT stands for grafted or Gewurztraminer, take your pick.

97 points – “This wine is typical of Koomilya in terms of its iodine, anise and blueberry notes, but without the dramatic mid-palate sweetness of other wines from this site. And yet in this instance, the tannins feel even firmer, with a salt, kelp and licorice frame. This will age very well. A true exploration of a great terroir.” – Ned Goodwin MW (JamesSuckling.com, March 2024)

96 points - "This is a distinctive wine, and yes, we often say it, but it seems the Shiraz carries the memory of the Gewurtz of its roots. Purple fruit, rose oil and musky perfume, some exotic spice, Turkish apricot and some dried fruit character, but also juicy raspberry too. It medium to full-bodied, dark and juicy, has immaculate fine-grained tannin, surprisingly cool clean acidity, and a distinctly stony and ‘mineral’ feel, with a supple dark red fruit finish of superb length, offering a flourish of perfume and spice to close. Superb wine." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

96 points – “Native ferment with 20% whole bunches and 16 days on skins; maturation in a 2800L oak vat. Although the most lifted and fragrant of the Koomilya shiraz triad, this has the same drive and effortless power, and at relatively modest alcohol. Musky, dusky florals, panforte spicing, dried orange peel, blackberry pastille, salumi, coal dust, iron, black coffee and fresh cherry pulp. This is the least upholstered of the block trio, which is neither here nor there, but there is a certain drive and relative lightness that distinguishes it as something quite individual, and also quite special.” – Marcus Ellis (Wine Companion, August 2024)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
