Description

The 2021 Block 74 Cabernet Sauvignon is rooted in the historic Spring Farm vineyard, a place that’s central to the Barry family’s story. When Jim and Nancy Barry acquired the property in 1977, it was part of the historic Wolta Wolta pastoral run—land that had been farmed since 1839.

Jim initially envisioned a horse stud, but his faith in Clare Valley’s future as a wine region inspired him to plant Cabernet Sauvignon on these north-facing slopes.

Sitting at 514 metres above sea level, Block 74 enjoys the kind of exposure and drainage that make it perfect for producing powerful, age-worthy wines.

Chocolatey richness mingling with fine tannins, earthy notes of bay and tobacco leaf, and a brambly spice that lingers on the finish. This is brilliant Clare Valley Cabernet from one of the region's great producers.

"The finish is long where tannin coalesces to offer excellent grip and texture. It’s a very good wine."

"The Spring Farm wines from Jim Barry are universally impressive... The flavours cruise along fine, lacy, gently chewy and graphite-laden tannins, the wine minerally overall and finishing long and fine in the distance. A stunning wine that speaks fluently of elegance and finesse."
– Mike Bennie (Wine Companion)

"The weighty mid-palate makes for quite the mouthful of flavour. This is a lovely wine, from a lovely season. It is balanced, but it is rich, too."
– Erin Larkin (Wine Advocate)

"Blue fruit and cherry, some rosy perfume, a sort of hazelnut nougat thing too, with a smattering of regional mint and gum leaf. It’s medium-bodied, has some savoury elements like tobacco and toasted nuts, clean balanced acidity, tannin is dense and close knit, and there’s a ferrous quality about it too, which is always a pleasing thing to find in red wine. The finish is long where tannin coalesces to offer excellent grip and texture. It’s a very good wine."

"The Spring Farm wines from Jim Barry are universally impressive. Medium weight with satiny texture, blue fruited and draped with leafy herbal elements and a touch of that ‘Australian bush walk’ character that sums up earth, bark and eucalyptus so well. The flavours cruise along fine, lacy, gently chewy and graphite-laden tannins, the wine minerally overall and finishing long and fine in the distance. A stunning wine that speaks fluently of elegance and finesse."

"The 2021 Spring Farm Block 74 Cabernet leads with leaf and tobacco, thyme and bay, cigar box and cassis. It is brambly and spiced, with layers of purple fruit and black spice in profusion. In the mouth, the wine is fine and detailed, with a chocolaty mid-palate and a finish of warm baking spices. The weighty mid-palate makes for quite the mouthful of flavour. This is a lovely wine, from a lovely season. It is balanced, but it is rich, too. Sealed under screw cap."
– Erin Larkin (Wine Advocate)

Block 74 Cabernet Sauvignon, adjacent to Block 75 Cabernet Sauvignon (the source of Clarevale Cabernet Sauvignon), is on a gentle north-facing slope of Lodge Hill North, and lies at an elevation of 514 metres. Jim Barry

Jim Barry Wines is a family affair in the Clare Valley.

Founded by one of SA's most influential wine figures, this producer has been one of the most acclaimed in the region since it began in 1974.

They focus primarily on traditional Clare Valley varieties, with a myriad of laser-sharp Rieslings, powerful Shiraz and intense Cabernet blends making up the foundations of the range. With a sprawling range including everything from super-premium to top value, they are considered a cornerstone of the Clare with classic wines that develop beautifully in the cellar given time.

Now, with the third generation of Barrys - Sam, Tom and Olivia - now in charge of the winemaking, marketing and business development, there is a new energy about the brand and there are plenty of exciting new things on the horizon.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
