Description

The 2023 Jim Barry Lodge Hill Shiraz is a true expression of Clare Valley's winemaking heritage, and a unbeatable price.

Founded in 1974 by one of South Australia's most influential figures, Jim Barry Wines has become a cornerstone of the region, celebrated for its powerful Shiraz and finely tuned Rieslings. Now, with the third generation of Barrys—Sam, Tom, and Olivia—leading the charge, the brand is infused with fresh energy while staying true to its roots.

Planted in 1979 on the historic Lodge Hill Vineyard, this Shiraz benefits from its unique position on the Eastern Ranges, just east of Clare township. The vineyard’s cool climate and well-drained soils produce a Shiraz that is both vibrant and layered.

On the nose, it’s all about ripe black plums and forest berries, with a hint of pepper and sweet-cured meat adding complexity. The palate is medium-bodied and supple, with a bright core of berry fruits, a touch of spicy oak, and fine-grained tannins providing structure without overpowering.

This is a Shiraz that balances richness and approachability, offering strong regional character at a fantastic price.

90 points
"A well put together, supple and medium-bodied expression of Clare shiraz. It's got a strong element of appealing, but present, licorice/anise throughout set amongst black jellybean, blackcurrant jelly sniffs and tastes with a suggestion of brined black olive. It's a lip-smacking and satisfying, deeply flavoured but approachable style of red. Strong regional character for the price point is great news. Dive in."
- Mike Bennie (Halliday Wine Companion)

90 points
"Black cherry, dried raspberry, nuts and toffee, with some toasty coconut oak. It’s medium to full-bodied, full of sweet cherry and spiced oak flavour, some praline too, with silty fine grained tannin, oak kind of obvious, yet cuddly and assuring, and a nutty and sweet red fruited finish of solid length. Yeah. it plays to the crowd, but that’s ok by me."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

A pastoral run dating back to 1839, and originally named Wolta Wolta, the 329 acre Lodge Hill Vineyard is situated on the Eastern Ranges, five kilometres east of the Clare township. Jim Barry purchased the land for The Lodge Hill Vineyard in 1977 as he was sure it would “produce some of the best Riesling in the Clare Valley.” However in 1979, Jim Barry planted his first Shiraz in this location, and it has gone on to produce our award winning Lodge Hill Shiraz.

AROMA

Perfectly ripe black plum and forest berry compote, with hints of pepper, spice, and a touch of sweet-cured meat on the nose.

PALATE

The palate is coiled and purposeful on entry and feels like it wants to explode. With a satin flow, a bright core of berry fruits and hints of spicy oak, this a very moreish wine.

91 points - "Dense, inky shiraz with chocolate/mocha, liquorice, Christmas cake, dark berry and subtle, spicy oak flavours. Big, almost syrupy red that is surprisingly drinkable now, but no rush." - Bob Campbell (The Real Review)

Jim Barry

Jim Barry Wines is a family affair in the Clare Valley.

Founded by one of SA's most influential wine figures, this producer has been one of the most acclaimed in the region since it began in 1974.

They focus primarily on traditional Clare Valley varieties, with a myriad of laser-sharp Rieslings, powerful Shiraz and intense Cabernet blends making up the foundations of the range. With a sprawling range including everything from super-premium to top value, they are considered a cornerstone of the Clare with classic wines that develop beautifully in the cellar given time.

Now, with the third generation of Barrys - Sam, Tom and Olivia - now in charge of the winemaking, marketing and business development, there is a new energy about the brand and there are plenty of exciting new things on the horizon.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
