Description

This impressive and precious wine is sourced from what are thought to be the oldest plantings of Mataro/Mourvedre in the world.

Planted in 1853, just eight rows have survived in Rowland Flat to this day, watched over by grape-grower Friedrich Koch like his family before him. These gnarled old bush vines are dry-grown, hand-tended and obsessed over, and they yield intensely concentrated and unique berries.

Dean Hewitson crafts his single vineyard wine from these historic plantings each year, giving us one of the most singular wines on the Australian wine stage. It's a beautiful drinking experience, filled with brooding, smouldering flavours and is incredibly satisfying. It's one of the jewels of the old vine Australian landscape and one you should experience at least once in your life.

"This single vineyard planted in 1853 is almost certainly the world’s oldest planting of Mourvedre. It is just one hectare and a priceless part of the Barossa landscape... A super example of this variety."
- Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

"A rare wine, a rare tasting experience, one that brings the flavours of the soil and the grape together with the emotional connection that comes with drinking wine off the oldest Mourvèdre vineyard in the world... It sends the senses wild. What a generous, flavourful, surprising, mouthful."
- Jeni Port (Wine Pilot)

The Old Garden vineyard is the oldest Mourvèdre vineyard in the world, planted in 1853. Dry-grown, original existing vines, pre-Phylloxera. Eight rows of this rare and unique planting remain to this day at Rowland Flat and produce winemaker Dean Hewitson’s much-lauded single-vineyard table wine bearing the Old Garden name. The vineyard has been hand-tended and dry-farmed by Friedrich Koch and his direct descendants across three centuries.

98 points - "Blueberries ripe to bursting, dried orange rind, coriander seed, candle wax. The fat and fur, salt and smoke from a poacher’s fire. A dark earthy seam. Sinewy flesh melts across the mid-palate and a fine grained grit pulls the wine through a sustained finish suggesting cellaring will be rewarded. One of the most significant mourvèdre wines on the planet." - Nick Ryan (The Weekend Australian)

98 points - "This single vineyard planted in 1853 is almost certainly the world’s oldest planting of Mourvedre. It is just one hectare and a priceless part of the Barossa landscape. As you might imagine with such old vine fruit and a single vineyard, the wine is a true reflection of the soils and the region. It has savoury dried herb and earthy dark plums plus a spicy, slightly sage-like and ferrous character that’s sustained to a very long finish. A little rhubarb pie character adds further complexity to the palate. A super example of this variety." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

97 points - "A rare wine, a rare tasting experience, one that brings the flavours of the soil and the grape together with the emotional connection that comes with drinking wine off the oldest Mourvèdre vineyard in the world. The vines were planted in 1853 on soils that comprise sand over limestone and see no irrigation. This is classic Barossa Mourvèdre (aka mataro): medium bodied, silky textured, red and black fruits flowing alongside a riot of spice, chocolate, clove, pepper and licorice. Fills the mouth and the senses with a seemingly youthful intensity, robust tannins and then you come across a sub-strain of savouriness, followed by chocolate, woodsy spiced oak. It sends the senses wild. What a generous, flavourful, surprising, mouthful." - Jeni Port (Wine Pilot)

96 points - "The 1853-planted Old Garden vineyard is thought to be the oldest mourvèdre vineyard in the world. Eight years ago I spoke at a symposium in Alicante and took along a bunch of Australian mourvèdre/mataro to show the winemakers and journos. This particular wine caused quite a stir, and the overwhelming response was that the Australian examples of the variety looked more European than European wines. It shows such amazing balance, tension and detail ... all meaty dark and black fruits, exotic spice, biscuity oak and amaro herbs. Savoury and wild, it is the benchmark for the variety in Australia for good reason." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Medium deep crimson. Intense black cherry, red currant, red plum aromas with vanilla, hint marzipan, hint peppercorn aromas. Richly flavoured black cherry, leafy, spicy, graphite flavours, loose knit fine slinky/ al dente tannins and underlying vanilla, mocha oak notes, Finishes firm with crunchy notes. Elemental, quite vigorous and juicy. Needs to settle down, but very good density. Drink now – 2032" - Andrew Caillard MW (The Vintage Journal)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
