Description

Heathcote Estate has been quietly flying the flag for Central Victorian Shiraz since the late ’90s, and this 2021 release shows just how dialled-in the team is. Grown on that famous belt of Cambrian soil - half a billion years old and still doing the heavy lifting - it’s a wine that’s all about place. Deep-rooted vines, no outside fruit, and winemaker Matt Elf keeping things honest with small-batch ferments and a mix of French oak (including large-format foudre) to let the vineyard do the talking.

The 2021 vintage gave the fruit a dream run - long, cool, and slow to ripen, meaning flavour and freshness came hand in hand. It’s not a big bruiser, but don’t mistake that for softness. There’s power here, it’s just built in layers. Plum, spice, earth, a little meatiness, all wrapped in a firm but fine tannin frame.

This is Heathcote Shiraz with focus - confident, composed, and not trying too hard.

95 points
"Cool and composed shiraz layered with herbs, meat, mint, cherry and clove. Excellent length and complexity without needing weight."
- Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Complex shiraz with herb, meat, woodsmoke and mint characters rippling through cherry and plum fruit flavours. It's cool and composed but flavoursome, too, with clove notes running out ahead of it all and excellent length to the finish. It's not the heaviest of Heathcote reds and it doesn't need to be; it has a whole lot else going on besides. Drink 2024 – 2036." - Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)

This Single Vineyard Shiraz comes from carefully selected sections of our family's vineyard, Heathcote Estate in Drummonds Lane, Heathcote in Central Victoria. The vineyard was planted in 1999 on the famous strip of 500 million year old Cambrian soil that defines the heart of the region.

A long bone-chilling winter in Heathcote led into a mild and suitably wet spring. Soil moisture was key to getting the season off to this great start. Mild conditions continued throughout the summer and the harvest didn’t commence until the 19th of February. The quality of the fruit was as good as we could wish for. 2022 was the first wine certified 100% organic from the estate after 4 years of transition.

From the exceptional 2021 vintage with fruit sourced from five individual blocks, the wine is fermented in a combination of open and closed fermenters, with a portion left as whole bunches. The must is pressed to a mixture of 300L hogsheads, 500L puncheons, and traditional 6250L large foudre for extended maturation.
Matured in French oak, 20% new, for a period of 12 months. Totally opaque dark red colour with a dark red hue. Elevated dark plum and liquorice aromas combine with some dried clove, vanillin cedar, earth and peppered meat notes. Refined and medium bodied the palate opens with generous red plum and liquorice fruits which are trailed by dried clove, peppered meat, vanillin cedar and earth elements. Structurally sturdy with a fine grained tannin framework it finishes with both elegance and finesse.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
