Description

The Blonde has become something of a Barossa Valley staple for those seeking the next wave of premium Barossa Shiraz for their cellar.

The Blonde is the more seductive and elegant of the Head Shiraz as a younger wine, but she's no slouch in the cellar. The concentrated flavours of dark berries, earthiness and spice are backed up by structural tannin, coming together to form a beautifully controlled & detailed wine.

A classic release of this much loved Shiraz from Alex.

"Tt is vibrant, subtly reductive, detailed and immaculately poised, making for effortless drinking"
- Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)

The original source vineyard for The Blonde lies in the Stone Well parish on the mid-rise of the western-ridge at 280m altitude and has a myriad of soil types including sandy-loams, red clays and a limestone rock base — blonde in colour — running the length of the vineyard. It crops naturally at around 1.5 ton/acre, shows perfume, blue & stone-fruits, produces riper, plumper, sweeter fruited wine, while still retaining acidity due to the higher limestone content of the soil.

Region: Barossa Valley, SA
Blend: Shiraz (100%)
ABV: 14.50%

96 Points - "Representing a lighter shade of Barossa, the suite of wine from Alex Head gets better each year. While this is full-bodied in terms of extract and alcohol, it is vibrant, subtly reductive, detailed and immaculately poised, making for effortless drinking. Limestone soils impart a je ne sais quoi tension to a whirl of white pepper, clove, boysenberry, deli meats and lilac. Yet what makes this so impressive is the combination of tannin, juicy freshness and confident oak handling, all boding well for cellaring. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. Screw cap." - Ned Goodwin MW (James Suckling)

95 Points - "It’s labelled as Barossa, though specifically it’s from an Eden Valley vineyard planted in 1962. Blue and black fruits, white flowers, milk chocolate and praline, aromatic spices. It’s supple, mouth-filling and plush, ginger biscuits, a little grilled meat, plenty of crushed stone tannin, apricot kernel, and a dense and ripe tannin finish of excellent length, some classic Eden sage perfume lingers. An excellent release." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

94 Points - "Shiraz with 2% cabernet sauvignon, fruit from Angaston, Flaxman Valley, Moculta and Stone Well; matured in French oak (25% new) for 17 months. Deep magenta, plush and perfumed with ripe plum, black cherry and blackberry fruits, dark spice, orange blossom, licorice, dark chocolate, sage and earth. Voluminous with a sense of latent power, tightly packed granitic tannin and a long, darkly spiced finish." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

Head Wines

Alex Head has had what you might call a meteoric rise through the Australian wine industry. In his short career as a producer he has been heralded as one of the best Young Gun Winemakers, not only in the Barossa but the whole country.

With no formal training as a winemaker, the purity and balance inherent in the wines are amazing.

Alex has a passion for the old vineyards that populate the Barossa. With a keen eye for a good site, Alex has put together a formidable portfolio of vineyards which produce simply outstanding renditions of Shiraz and Grenache year-in, year-out. These are some of the most exciting wines in the Barossa.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
