Description

Classic South Australian Shiraz from the new kid on the block (well, sort of).

This comes from vineyards in both the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. Alan Varney has great long-standing relationships with some of the SA's top growers and he takes full advantage to turn out the best value wines he can.

The Shiraz is soft and plummy, with a sweet mid-palate and a high-toned aromatic lift from the fruit grown in the cooler parts of the Hills.

The safest of safe bets for SA Shiraz lovers.

Sourced from vineyards in McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. Dual-Regional blend for the heady aromatics and spicy notes which the cooler sites lend while the warmer sites help with structure and mid-palate weight
Cold soaked prior to fermentation with 15% whole bunches included. 17 to 20 days on skins, fermented in custom made headed down open top fermenters. Pressed to seasoned Burgundy coopered barrels for 10 months maturation. 100% Shiraz.

92 Points - "A multi-regional blend (no matter how close the regions may be) to achieve elevated florals and finery, with ample weight. Smoked meats, bitter chocolate, pepper grind and a swab of menthol drying across the pushy finish. This is a good wine. It has the potential to be very good." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

90 Points - "Bright ruby and purple in the glass. Dark berry compote and bay-leaf aromatics. Blue and purple berries fill the palate while being entwined by a minty savouriness. Good length and ample tannins to dry it" - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

90 Points - "Made from a mix of fruit from Clarendon, Blewitt Springs and Whites Valley, this is a well composed and sophisticated McLaren Vale Shiraz on the reserved side as it delivers layers of cocoa, ironstone and olive tapenade with the first signs of mature earthy tones. It then takes on a more fleshy personality with spicy blackberry and mulberry flavours supported by quite supple tannins. It is ready to go but will drink well for some time to come." - Angus Hughson (Wine Pilot)

92 Points - "It smells smoky and meaty, with sage, black cherries, black plums and blackberries. There’s cracked black pepper and nutmeg. It has a ferrous tension, soy sauce umami-salty top note. On the palate it does all the above and quite elegantly, it’s savoury and balanced. Texture is a bit like creamy mocha with black pepper heat. Very tasty." - Kasia Sobiesiak (The Wine Front)

    Varney Shiraz - wonderful 2018

This is a wonderful surprise. If I could buy more I would!

The rounded mouthfeel and soft tannins make for a delicious Shiraz. Impeccable winemaking with the advantages of being able to drink now or put away a few bottles

Well made, delicious, but I would have liked it to be more interesting

Varney Wines

Varney Wines began with just a "tonne for fun" for Alan Varney to play around with over a decade ago.

He took his years of experience working at top South Australian wineries, including time spent at Orlando Wines, Longview Vineyard and over a decade as senior winemaker at d’Arenberg, and poured his skills into crafting a style of wine that he and his friends and family could enjoy.

The side gig became a full-time obsession, leading to Alan purchasing a dilapidated property at the Gateway of McLaren Vale to house a tasting room alongside his wife Kathrin’s restaurant, Victor’s Place. A sustainable modern winery was built and their first commercial release was unveiled. The wines have been taking off ever since culminating with Varney being named James Halliday's Best New Winery in 2021.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
