Description

Sourcing fruit from some of SA’s most renowned vineyards to make up the components for the Distant Light Shiraz, Gilles and the team have sought to create a great multi-regional wine.

Shiraz from the Eden and Barossa and Grenache from some great old-vine vineyards in McLaren Vale, combine to produce a balanced and fresh wine. Spice, smokiness, red and black fruit, lots going on in a wine that’s ready to drink now.

While not a wine destined for long-term cellaring, this Distant Light is a great showcase for SA regions, taking the best of the regional/variety character and blending them to make a sum that is greater than its parts.

91 Points - "This is bottle no 491/933, so not a lot made. Exotic spice, marzipan, red and black fruits, a bit of bacon bone and mint. It’s medium-bodied, nutty and fleshy, plenty of spice and poached strawberry, maybe sits a little flat on the palate, and lacking a little vigour and energy, fine grained tannin, and a smoky meaty and salty finish of solid length. Good wine, and I’d maybe say drink it on the younger side." Gary Walsh (Wine Front)

93 Points - "Barossa shiraz (Ebenezer and Mengler Hill) with Blewitt Springs grenache. Frankly, it would be finer without the Barossan intrusion. Yet this is a stylistic choice that many will enjoy, marked by more obvious oak than Thistledown's other top wines. Full-weighted, with iodine, camphor and plentiful dark fruit allusions. Densely packed, with a sluice of menthol, anise and toasty oak to curb an intense finish that remains admirably fresh." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 Points - "This immediately enticing and complete wine draws you in with its intriguing blend of ethereal aromas with more than a passing resemblance to fine Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Suave dark cherry, charcuterie, peppery spice, raspberry and roasted meat aromas deliver power and subtlety, beautifully matched to sweet oak. The Shiraz and Grenache then come together superbly to deliver a mouthfilling palate with fantastic fruit density plus a rich velvety texture underlined by firm tannins that builds to peacock’s tail finish. Seriously impressive." - Angus Hughson (Wine Pilot)

2020 vintage conditions were perfect in many ways. A warm , dry early season gave way to a mild, sometimes cool, February and March which allowed for ripening at a very relaxed pace. Small yields across all regions concentrated the fruit flavours while the dry conditions led to low disease pressures.<p/>

Thistledown

Thistledown wines was founded by UK natives Fergal Tynan, and Giles Cooke, the two MWs met while they began their WSET studies and formed a fast and strong bond.

While they have vineyards and wineries across the globe, Thistledown holds a special place in their hearts, with many of Giles' first forays into MW wine travel happening around Australia.

With renowned local winemaker Peter Leske on hand year-round, Giles is still quite hands-on with Thistledown, ensuring to be downunder throughout the year at key points in the winemaking process.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
